Arvid was born on February 2, 1929 in Mitchell, Nebraska to Herman and Frieda (Thomas) Gompert. He was raised in the Sunflower Area on a farm near Mitchell, Nebraska. He attended Sunflower School k-12. He loved playing basketball. In 1947, he was a member of the state champion team making the winning basket at the buzzer. His teammates were like brothers to him.
He married his high school sweetheart, Jackie Gentry, who was one of the cheerleaders at the time. They married on September 1, 1948 and to this union they were blessed with two daughters and three sons, 13 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Arvid was a farmer in the Sunflower community until his retirement. After retirement he volunteered at RWMC. He crocheted many baby blankets for the newborns.
He enjoyed watching his grandkids in all of their activities and loved when they came by to see him.
Arvid went to the YMCA on a daily basis. He loved doing woodworking projects.
He was a member of the Panhandle Coop Board for 14 years, served on Farm Service Agency board, Sunflower School board and was an elder of the Federated Church where he was a lifelong member.
Arvid always had a tape measure in his pocket and a plier in his belt. He also always had a McDonald's coffee with 2 creamers every morning with his friends.
Nothing was more important to Arvid than his family. He taught us the meaning of hard work. He left us his love, his compassion, showed us humbleness, gratitude and kindness. This is his legacy he left to all of us to follow.
