Betty Lucille Sommer

Betty (Kaufman) Sommer passed away Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Residency Care Center in Scottsbluff. Daughter of Katherine Haverick Kaufman and Conrad Kaufman, Betty was born September 19, 1929 in Gering, Nebraska and graduated from Gering High School.

Betty had four siblings, Violet Whaley, Marvin Kaufman, Elaine Steege and Patricia King. She loved all of them, but was especially close to Elaine and Pat. Betty married Harold Sommer and they were together for 69 years. As newly-weds, they farmed first in Henry, NE, then north of Scottsbluff and then in southern Sioux County before retiring to Scottsbluff.

Betty was a founding member of the longest running Extension Club in Nebraska and enjoyed entering her quilts and afghans in the Scotts Bluff County Fair. She was an expert seamstress and created many beautiful garments for herself and her daughter. Her afghans were cherished by all who received one. We always knew they were made of 10 percent yarn and 90 percent love.

Betty and Harold had two children; Mark (Donna), Cedar Falls, Iowa and Mary Kay, Madison, Wisconsin. She was an excellent mom and a true friend to many. She loved her four grandchildren; Ashley (Madison), Kevin (New York City); Leslie (Rochester, MN); and Melissa (Cedar Falls). She had two great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Alexander.

She was preceded in death by her son, Mark, her brother, Marvin and sister Violet.

Her memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at Salem Congregational Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Dale Brown officiating. Inurnment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Morrill. Cremation has taken place.

A memorial has been established to Salem Congregational Church and to Regional West Hospice. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Residency Care Center, the nursing team on 2 West, and the hospice staff for treating our mother with dignity, grace and kindness.
