

Carl Aaron Nyquist passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013 while vacationing in San Carlos Panama. An informal, memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 8, at Trails West YMCA Camp – Retreat Center, 1918 SW Beltline Hwy, Scottsbluff, with Larry Massie officiating. Inurnment will be 3 p.m. in the Nebraska Veteran’s Cemetery in Alliance, with military rites by American Legion Post #9 of Hemingford. Memorials have been established to the Panhandle Humane Society or to the Donor’s Choice. Carl was born June 11, 1941 to Aron and Wilma (Dye) Nyquist in Alliance, and raised on the family farm east of Hemingford. Two days after graduating from Hemingford High School in 1959, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, and served with the Pacific Submarine Force in Pearl Harbor. Upon his honorable discharge in 1962, Carl attended Chadron State College where he met and married his wife Karol Ann Gorr. They moved to Scottsbluff in 1966 where he was employed by the United Telephone Company of the West until 1985. He then began his Federal Service with the U. S. Department of Energy, retiring in 2003. During his career Carl was a member of the International Brotherhood of electrical Workers for 33 years, serving as president of two different I.B.E.W. locals for 12 years. He also held office in the AFL-CIO during this time. As a private pilot, he twice restored his J3 Piper Cub, and flew it for over 40 years. Carl enjoyed time with his family and friends, especially his two grandsons Erik and Gunnar. He was an avid Husker fan, who enjoyed traveling including a memorable trip to Sweden to visit the homesteads of his father and grandparents. He loved flying his airplane and spending time at the Gorr family ranch near Chadron. Carl was known for his fun loving sense of humor and always had a story to share. He was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, brother and uncle and he will be deeply missed. Survivors include his wife Karol; children, Shelley Sorensen (Mike Manheim), and Jeffrey (Sandy) Nyquist, all of Lincoln; grandchildren, Erik and Gunnar Nyquist, Lincoln; former son-in-law, Chuck Sorensen, Lincoln; sister, Florence (Jerry) Walters, Hemingford; foster brother, Gordon (Diana) Smith, Hemingford; nieces, Lenni (Tim) Johnson, Hemingford, Carolyn (Jeremy) Meador, Starr, Idaho, Stacey (Michael) Shaler, Santa Cruz, Calif.; nephew, Les Walter (Lynn Covalt), Hemingford; great nieces and nephews, Brook Raschke, Denver, Tanya Walters Groveland, Fla., Alisa Walters, and Travis (Amber) Walters both of Sioux City, Iowa; several great-great nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Cindy Gorr, Sammamish, Wash., and other relatives including family in Sweden and England. He was preceded in death by his parents, and parents-in-law Don and Helen Gorr and brother-in-law Lynn Gorr.
