I just recently learned of Elmer's passing. I was saddened to hear this news. Elmer had a way of befriending a person even under less than perfect circumstances. He was a great man, and will be sorely missed. My sympathies to your family.

Just learned that ole Elmer decided it was time to go home! Francie I know how dedicated you were & when you where with us at Fort Meade I remember thinking ""I hope I can be that good to my husband"". I will never forget Elmer & our numerous late night discussions about Jesus! Last time I saw Elmer he was on a guerney leaving to go home to Scottsbluff & he almost hollered at me saying ""Vicki aren't you going to say goodbye?"" He then asked for a peck to the cheek & he was off, I didn't tell him goodbye but only I'll see you later Elmer & I will one day. God bless ya'll! See ya..........someday ok?

I can hardly write this as tears keep coming to my eyes as a result of facing the reality that Elmer has passed away. For this I am truly sorry to Francie and the rest of the family. Even though I am not directly related to Elmer or the rest of the family he feels like family to me. I suppose the earliest and greatest thing Elmer did for me was tell my parents to pay more attention to me because I was hardly saying a word at that time and after my parents made some changes I changed. That may seem like a small thing but it is big to me. There were many times when I felt like I was being overlooked and for someone like Elmer to make mention of that proved that I was an important person. I also remember when our cat ""Bo"" had been ran over on the road running in front of where we lived and that Elmer was the one to notice that cat looked a lot like Bo. He was right. Then there was the time that Elmer took Mom, Bruce and I to Mom's hometown and on the way there or back Elmer stopped to pick up a turtle on the highway and gave it to us. I was to blame for losing that turtle when Bruce, my older brother, told me to watch the turtle. I had seen Elmer get upset with people but somehow I managed to stay on his good side MOST of the time. The funny thing is that the thing I most remember about Elmer is his eyes and his smile. There were also the jokes that he told that only Elmer could get by with telling. Elmer was an example to me of a different kind of Christian whose words were more honest and who faith in God seemed to be more sincere. At a later time in my life, Elmer and Francie listened to me when I was struggling to know what I believed. You heard my side and offered me wise counsel. I don't know how to articulate all the things that Elmer did for me. I regret that I didn't call him more or write more letters or send more cards when I knew he was sick. My heart sank when I received this sad news because I was hoping to introduce my fiancee to both Elmer and Francie. But I am grateful that he no longer has to suffer the misery he has struggled through for a long time. I can only imagine how much harder this is for all of you. I pray that all of you will remember the real Elmer Hays and that his model of faith and life will continue to be an example for all of us to live by and that God's grace will envelope you more than you have ever known before and that you will be able to say from the bottom of your hearts, ""It is well with my soul."" God's shalom be with you all.

Francee & family: June & I were sorry to hear of Elmer's passing & yet we know that he had the Faith to know there is ""life"" in heaven after our earthly travel. We did not know in time to make the trip out for his service. We know your memories will all be fond ones. God Bless. Family is forever.

Francie and family, we just learned last night of Elmer's passing into his eternal life with our Father. Although it makes us sad and we will miss him, we are also rejoicing with you that he is finally home and we look forward to the great reunion in heaven we will have with him and others that have gone on ahead of us. We have always had a special place in our hearts for your family and it will remain there. We love you guys!!

Francee, I am so sorry(and shocked) to hear of this sad news. Elmer is happy to be walking with the Lord in paradise. He was a great man who will never be forgotton.

To my old friend i will miss you dearly. I enjoyed the times we had talks and when you let me help you build a garage when i was out of work. God Bless You. Love to the family I miss you all.
