

Emma Terrissa Hanway Beaird, 103, died Friday, November 18, 2016 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. She was born April 8, 1913 in a blizzard on the family farm in Morrill County to Frank and Tessie (Twist) Hanway. She attended rural school and graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1930. She taught rural school one year and then married Howard Beaird. In 1935, they moved to southern California with their son and while there they added twin daughters to the family. After a decade, they returned to western Nebraska and permanently settled in Scottsbluff. They built the first home in the Hillerage Addition.
Emma belonged to Rebekahs, PTA, and Church Women United. She was a 4-H leader. She was active in her church and served on the Western Conference Board for the United Church of Christ. Following the death of her husband, she worked at J.C. Penney. Emma loved her family and was the keeper of the family history. She loved gardening, her yard, and her cat. She was a strong, faithful woman who saw the best in people.
Emma is survived by her children, James (Beverly) Beaird-Leeper, Monmouth, OR, Lea (James) Lawrence-Moiso, Portland, OR and Linda Burchard, Lincoln, NE; nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren, sister-in-law Barbara Hanway; special cousins Lassa (Rex) Nielsen, Reatha Martin, and Mary Dillon, many nieces and nephews and close friends Don and Linda Gross.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four younger brothers (Frank, Don, Jack and Richard) and an infant brother.
Her funeral service will be held Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Scottsbluff. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday from 1-7pm at Dugan Kramer Funeral Chapel. Casket will be closed at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Scotts Bluff County 4-H Council or the Wildcat Hills Nature Center. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.dugankramer.com.
