Helen Laverne Greenwalt

Helen Laverne Greenwalt, 91, of Scottsbluff, died Monday, December 19, 2005 at Heritage Health Care Center in Gering. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 22, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Ray Venghaus officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. A memorial has been established to Calvary Lutheran Church where she was a member for nearly 50 years. Friends may call at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. Helen was born December 12, 1914 at Belvidere, Nebraska to Grover and Sadie (Rachow) Hartley. She attended school in Carleton, Nebraska, graduating as salutatorian of the Class of 1932. She graduated from Mary Lanning School of Nursing in Hastings, Nebraska as an R.N. and completed her student nursing training in Chicago and Ogden, Utah. In 1939 she moved to Scottsbluff to take a nursing job at Methodist Hospital. She married John Greenwalt in 1940 in Scottsbluff where they made their home. She moved back to Carleton in 1944 with her daughter, Joan, to live with her parents while her husband served in the United States Navy returning to Scottsbluff in 1945. She worked many years at St. Mary’s Hospital until her retirement in 1968. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing, needlework and crossword puzzles. She and her husband enjoyed square dancing and belonged to a local square dance club for many years. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother to her three daughters, six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Helen is survived by her daughters, Joan and husband Bill Lighty of Colorado Springs, CO, Vicki and husband Jack Schmidt of Scottsbluff, and Rita and husband Don Barnes of Lake Minatare, NE; grandchildren: Clark Ummel of Denver, CO, Carrie Beck of Flower Mound, TX, Kim Nelsen, Ames, IA, Brian Schmidt, Las Vegas, NV, Russell Todd of Scottsbluff, NE and Sara Harris of Scottsbluff, NE; and her seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John and a brother Robert.
