John Vasquez

John Vasquez, 84, of Scottsbluff, died Monday, April 30, 2007, at his home. A funeral mass will be held 9:00 A.M., Thursday, May 3, 2007, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Scottsbluff with Father Don Buhrman officiating. Interment will be at 3:00 P.M., Thursday, in Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell with military honors provided by the Paxton American Legion Post No. 303. Friends may visit at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff from 1:00 to 8:00 P.M., on Wednesday. Memorials have been established to St. Agnes Catholic Church and Paxton American Legion Post No. 303. John was born May 2, 1922, at Garden City, Kansas to Catalino and Josephine Vasquez. He served in the United States Army during World War II form 1942 to 1945 as a paratrooper. On August 27, 1943, he married Ruby Thomas at Paris, Texas. He was a longtime resident of Paxton where he worked as a ranch hand. In his younger days enjoyed rodeo. They moved to Scottsbluff five years ago. He was actively involved with the Paxton American Legion Post No. 303, Optimist Club of Paxton, and helped deliver Meals-on-Wheels. He was an avid sports fan and most of all enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren doing their activities. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Vasquez; children, Sonya (Terry) Gilliland of Scottsbluff, Patty (Paul) Asmus of Littleton, Colorado and Connie Brewer of Kearney; grandchildren, Tanya (Mitch) Carter of Castle Rock, Colorado, Todd Gilliland of Scottsbluff, Traci Gilliland of Scottsbluff, Troy (Jeannie) Gilliland of Cleveland, Ohio, Dane (Ticia) Brewer of Lakewood, Colorado, Roger (Michelle) Asmus of Littleton, Colorado and Andrea (Aaron) Lybarger of Littleton, Colorado, 15 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Vern Vasquez of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Phillip Vasquez of North Platte, Catalino Vasquez of Sutherland, Lew Vasquez of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Lucita Goodnight of Sutherland. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; two sisters; and son-in-law, Dennis Brewer.
