

Marlin Kenneth Carrell, 71, of Scottsbluff, died Friday, December 13, 2013, at his home with family by his side after a nine year battle with renal-cell cancer. His funeral mass will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Scottsbluff with Father Vince Parsons officiating. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff. The family will receive friends at the funeral home between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., Tuesday prior to the rosary. A memorial has been established to Festival of Hope. Cremation has taken place. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.dugankramer.com Marlin was born October 28, 1942, in Orchard, Nebraska to Kenneth “Sye” and Rose (Sukup) Carrell. He grew up on a farm west of Creighton. He attended Creighton High School where he ran track and played football. He set numerous track records that were held for 30 years. He graduated in 1961, and attended Wayne State College for one year on a track and football scholarship. He attended barber college practicing in Creighton. He married Sharon Kleinschmit on December 28, 1964, in Creighton at St. Ludger Church. They lived in Omaha for a year before moving to Norfolk, where he worked for ten years as a production supervisor at Dale Electronics. He learned the upholstery and refinishing trades in Norfolk and in 1977, moved to Scottsbluff to open a business together with his wife from 1977 to 1984. He worked in purchasing for cable companies before retiring from Charter Communications after 20 years. After retiring, he worked part-time for Cen-Con of Kansas until shortly before his death. A member of the Elks BPOE #1367, he served as Exalted Ruler in 1988-89 and 1998-99 and DDGER 1991. Marlin was an accomplished wood worker, building new and restoring antique furniture. His prize possessions were a 1967 Chevelle (original owner) and a refurbished Allis Chalmers tractor like the one he grew up using on the farm. He was an avid fan of Earnhardt’s in NASCAR. In recent years he played cook for hunters during the season at the Republican River Ranch in Haigler, making many good friends. He and his wife were able to take several camping trips throughout the United States. His best work may have been as “Grandpa” to his grandchildren who adored him. Marin is loved and will be sadly missed by his wife of 49 years, Sharon; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kirsten (Warren) Carrell of Beatrice; grandchildren, Layna and Tevan; daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Lt. Col. Kevin Carlson of Papillion; grandchildren, Emma and Lucas; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ray and Nanci Kleinschmit of Yorba Linda, California, Tom and Liana (Magee) Kleinschmit of St. Paul, Minnesota, Jerry Kleinschmit of Anaheim, California, Linda (Kleinschmit) and Rafa Muñoz of San Diego, and Ron and Cathy Kleinschmit of Concord, New Hampshire. He was preceded in death by his parents.
