

Martin E. Bowen, 63, of Mitchell, died Monday, April 9, 2007, in an airplane accident northeast of Scottsbluff. A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, April 14, 2007, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff with Pastor Steve Demoret officiating. Cremation was at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. Memorials have been established to Mitchell Library Building Fund, 1447 Center Avenue, Mitchell, Nebraska 69357 and Smile Train. Marty was born August 24, 1943, at Denver, Colorado to John and Marie Bowen. He grew up in Littleton and graduated from the Littleton High School in 1961. He then attended Western State College at Gunnison graduating in 1965 with his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. He taught for two years at Denver Public Schools. In 1969, he married Judith Meader. He served in the Colorado National Guard for six years. He transferred to Douglas County School System and retired after 30 years of teaching. He spent the summers working on his family’s farm at Strasburg, Colorado. They moved to Scottsbluff ten years ago and he continued to substitute teach. Marty was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and coached wrestling at Douglas County Schools for many years. He had a great passion for flying and teaching kids. Survivors include his wife, Judy; son, Trace Bowen of Waco, Texas; daughter, Carrie, (Chris) Jones of Helena, Montana; brother, John Bowen of Parker, Colorado; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, George Bowen.
