Mel was born on December 15, 1950, in Gering to Delbert and Ruby (Feckly) Elledge and remained a lifelong resident of the community. He graduated from Gering High School in 1969. On October 28, 1972, he married Pam Engelhaupt, and together they raised two children, Matthew and Brooke. This October would have marked their 53rd wedding anniversary.
Mel worked for Scottsbluff Sash and Door for 35 years before retiring from Scottsbluff County Maintenance in 2012. He was a proud and active member of the Knights of Columbus, and during his children’s younger years, he served as an Assistant Scoutmaster. Mel was deeply involved in his children’s activities and always supported them in every way.
Those who knew Mel will remember him as kind, helpful, and full of conversation. He enjoyed meeting new people and never missed an opportunity to visit with others. Mel had a passion for woodworking, leaving behind countless handcrafted pieces for his children and grandchildren that will serve as daily reminders of his love and skill. A true perfectionist, he was known to point out small flaws in his work that no one else could see, always striving to make each project better. He approached every task with care and precision, often measuring and remeasuring to perfection.
Mel was always busy with projects and had a knack for collecting things he thought might be useful someday. He loved auctions and helping others track down what they were looking for, though sometimes he couldn’t resist trying to talk them out of buying it. His energy and constant activity were trademarks of who he was.
Self-taught in many trades, Mel was also a skilled mechanic, body man, and painter, rebuilding many engines over the years. He also had a love for classic vehicles, building a collection that he cherished and shared with his son. His great smile, warm laugh, and the love he gave as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend will always be remembered.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby and Delbert Elledge. He is survived by his wife, Pam; son, Matthew; daughter Brooke (William) Haga; grandsons Tyler and Jacob Haga; and many extended family members who will carry his memory forward.
A Wake will be held Sunday, September 28, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Home in Scottsbluff. The Funeral Mass will take place Monday, September 29, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Scottsbluff, with burial to follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering.
Melvin’s life was a testament to love, family, hard work, and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
