Doris was her mother’s first gift – something her very own to cherish and something no one could take away from her. She was her mother’s first born, her best friend and her confidant to the very end.
Her parents instilled a love for God and His word very early. She could recite the books of the bible at age 3 and received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of God, at age 7 with her mother at her side. As an adult, she mostly felt that a relationship with God and Jesus was a personal one that didn’t need the approval of man. Those who knew her closest, knew she had a love for the word of God however, a seed planted by her Daddy. She loved to talk bible with him whenever she had the chance. She could give any bible scholar a run for their money with the teaching her Daddy placed in her heart, along with the words of Life that she read for herself.
She loved singing and playing piano. From an early age, she would sit her sisters beside her on the piano or organ, and she would make them learn harmony and to sing on key… pinching them if they got out of line! She sang in church as a teenager, then later in life sang with a band called the Texas Tones. She sang Karaoke in the clubs and was always a hit, but she loved most to sing with her mom, sisters, and her daughter, Mylinda. When her lungs began to fail, she used singing as an exercise to gain deeper breath… and life.
Doris loved animals! Horses and dogs were her passion. She firmly believed everyone she knew should have the opportunity to ride a horse and if within her power, she made that happen! Her most faithful soulmates throughout the years were her dogs Duece, Sassy, Taz, Cooter and until this past year, faithful til the end, was her German Shepherd, Dixie.
In her recent years, she adopted several chickens that migrated to her yard and eventually ended up raising many new ones with her sister Martha’s help. Her favorite roosters were Al Capone and Elvis. As her health declined, she found a new home for her chickens with family member, Melissa Gage. And what’ do ya know, within a few weeks, new kittens arrived looking for a home and though cats were NOT her favorite, she gladly fed them and made sure they had shelter. Martha brought in the runt female – a black kitten with white markings - to meet Doris and mom named her “M.C. Charlie” (short for Martha’s Cat). For the first and only time that I know of, Doris had a cat! She swore it was Martha’s cat and not hers, but she lovingly accepted it and made sure Charlie was fed, sheltered (in the house by the way), and had plenty of toys… yes, Doris had a cat!
Doris also loved working with animal rescue organizations. She spent countless hours at her computer in this field helping to rehome lost or abused dogs, and even horses or cats when needed.
She enjoyed reading novels, but more than reading them, she enjoyed writing them. She wrote many stories… LOTS of Stories. She included family members as her subject in many, but also some just straight from the imagination. She was very talented. She enjoyed sketching as a hobby and sketched drawings to accompany her stories. She often felt her gift for writing was unappreciated, but her written words will be held in love by her family for years to come.
Doris was very opinionated and enjoyed a good argument … and when needed, even a good fight. She probably fought more men in her life than women, but when necessary, she didn’t have a problem putting either in their place. Don’t mess with her family – she will correct you quickly. Her love for her family was beyond
Doris’ wishes were to lay her eternal sleep next to her daddy. Her interment will take place at Roselawn Cemetary in Segoville, Texas with a private service for immediate family at a later date.
