At just 16 years old, John enlisted in the military under a false age. He served in both the United States Navy and Army until sustaining injuries during the Korean War.
After returning to the United States, John adopted two children after being told by doctors that he would not be able to have children biologically. In the fall of 1972, John met Lois Annette, and the two shared a whirlwind romance, marrying a few months later on March 17, 1973. Through this marriage, John welcomed her three children into his family. In a joyful and unexpected blessing, John and Lois learned at the ages of 40 and 41 that they were expecting a baby girl, completing their lively household with her arrival in June 1974.
John held many jobs throughout his life, but he was especially proud of his career in finance. He worked as a loan officer with Beneficial Finance before going on to serve as Vice President of American National Bank of Texas in Terrell.
Outside of work, John found great joy in fishing, boating, and spending time on the lake.
John was preceded in death by his parents and siblings; his wife of 46 years, Lois Shields; and his stepson, Charles Allison.
He is survived by his children, Jerry Shields, Cathy Shields, Karen Williams, Tammy Gooding, and Allison Allen, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A small service with military honors will be held at Roselawn Memorial Gardens at a later date.
