Pat graduated from Cement City High School at 16 years old in 1956. After graduation, she took a course in the use of a comptometer. During that course, students were shown an invention - a ten-digit adding machine. She never touched a comptometer again after she took the course. She married when she was seventeen, and her husband moved frequently, always searching for a better job. They lived in Bermuda, Michigan, and Florida before finally settling in Dallas. After seven years, the marriage ended in divorce.
She found an apartment in downtown Dallas and went to worjk for Great American Insurance. She worked her way up in the company, but resigned when the working conditions became unpleasant. She was then hired by Fairmont Hotel to oversee their accounts payable. She received several promotions and eventually served as their comptroller and then auditor. She loved to learn, stay busy, and thought bookkeeping was fun!
A few years after her divorce, a friend of a friend set her up on a blind date with Harvey Culver. She was surprised that he was a Baptist Minister, but they hit it off instantly. They started dating, and two years later, they married. Harvey rented a newly renovated apartment across the hall from Pat and she joined him. It was the shortest move of her life.
Pat continued to work when Harvey became injured and was unable to work. She served as a church secretary for three different Methodist churches - in Pleasant Grove, Terrell, and finally, the First United Methodist Church in Mesquite.
Pat was never blessed with children of her own, but Harvey's daughter, Linda, has proved to be a gift to her from God. She has enjoyed two beautiful granddaughters, Tara and Ladona, as well as her great-grandchildren.
Soon after her beloved Harvey passed away, Pat decided to make one more move to the Waterford in Mesquite. She has served as the BINGO caller, worker the Corner Store, led the morning exercise, modeled in fashion shows, organized the Berean Baptist Church (now Hope Church) involvement in the spiritual lives of the residents, and joined the Big Brother and Big Sisters.
She has been a member of the Berean Baptist Church (Hope Church) since January 2000. She taught Sunday School to 5th and 6th grade girls, served in the Kids Beach Club and taught students about the Lord, served on the offering team and also went up to the church weekly to make sure bulletins were printed and ready for Sunday Service.
She loved her family, loved her church, and loved serving the Lord. She was a sweet soul and will be deeply missed by all those who loved her.
