Douglas John DeGeorge

Douglas J. [Doug] DeGeorge, of Carmel and Silverton, Oregon. Doug was born on Long Island, New York in 1950. He attended Columbia University, where he played basketball. He was also an avid baseball player in the minor leagues for the New York Mets.

Doug played his last hole in the game of life on October 20, 2013, at his home in Carmel after a long, courageous battle with brain cancer. He packed in a lot during his 63 years, and is gone way too soon, but will never be forgotten for his love of fun, jokes and a boisterous laugh that matched a huge, outgoing personality. He will be missed by his many friends and family members.

Doug was the ultimate entrepreneur: In his early days he owned the first pay phone company. He was also the owner of Sadie's bar in Carmel. He started TLC Vending, the Rose Lady Company, DeGeorge Construction, and the Kris Kringle Christmas Tree Company. Upon buying a Christmas tree farm in Oregon, he renewed his contractor's license to later buy and build the Silverton Inn & Suites, the Lodge at Detroit Lake, and numerous spec houses in Oregon. If he didn’t have a dozen balls in the air at once, he didn’t feel like he was doing enough.

Doug’s best catch, however, was in 1992, when he married Elaine Chastain at Pebble Beach. Doug and Elaine welcomed the birth of their two sons Doug Jr. and Danny not long after that.

Doug's real passions were playing golf, as well as collecting and drinking wine. He was also a collector of baseball and music memorabilia, amassing a wonderful collection he reveled in. He was a member of San Francisco's Olympic Club, Spanish Bay, and Knights of the Vine. He also played in the Kelly-Baruck Golf Tournament for over 35 years in Pebble Beach, and the Regular Guy Golf Tournament over the last 20 years, in Arizona. In 2011, he represented the Olympic Club in the Carr Mara Tournament in both Ireland and Scotland.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Elaine, sons Doug Jr. and Danny, and numerous relatives in New York and Florida. The family would like to express our thanks to Raphael Blancas-Prado for his gracious assistance during this trying time.
