She was born in Durand Michigan, on August 22nd, 1928 to George Dewey and Coralie Elizabeth Corey. When George lost his job in Michigan, they moved to the Toledo, Oregon area to be near Coralie’s family. In Oregon, George and Coralie farmed, hauled firewood, and did what was needed to survive the Great Depression. Because the farm was not near any schools, Alda and her two brothers lived with friends, returning home on weekends. She graduated from Toledo High School in 1947 and then studied nursing at Portland University.
Alda met Bill Watson, who was a Master Sergeant in the Army, on a blind date. After a two-year engagement, they were married on June 5, 1951. They lived in Port Townsend for a year and then moved to Seattle, where Alda became a draftsman for Boeing. She stopped work when daughter Linda was born in 1953 and then Teresa in 1956. They bought a house in Ballard in 1954 for $6700 where they lived the rest of their lives.
Alda helped with the finances by working as a banquet waitress, for Hewitt’s Catering, Tillicum Village, and the Edgewater Inn. She and her friend Tillie Lambrecht started a catering business called “Candlelight Catering.”
The family enjoyed the outdoors, camping in their canvas Army tent up at Mt. Rainier, and at a family property down in south Puget Sound at Case Inlet. Both Bill and Alda were very creative, Bill with his woodworking, and Alda with her sewing, cooking, drawing, and gardening.
Their first granddaughter, Erin Siobhan was born in 1986 and second granddaughter Sara Kjerstin Noel in 1988. Alda and Bill loved the time they had taking care of them and taking them on camping trips to the ocean.
Alda’s faith in God was the most important thing in her life, followed by her family. She made sure her family attended church. They attended Berean Bible Church in Shoreline, where Alda served as a deaconess for many years.
After the death of Bill in 1995, she cared for her mother until her death in 2005. Her life was one of caring for people, whether it was her family, church members, neighbors, or her many friends. The last 3 years of her life were at Aegis Living of Galer on Queen Anne, where she continued to bless everyone around her.
She is preceded in death by her parents George and Coralie, her two brothers George and Jack, and sister Elaine.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Mickelberry) and Terri Watson, son-in-law Ron Mickelberry, granddaughters Erin and Sara Mickelberry, and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Friday, April 22nd at 10am in Abbey View Memorial Park at 3601 Alaska Rd., Brier, WA 98036 followed by a 1:00 pm Celebration of her life at Berean Bible Church, located at 2345 N 185th St, Shoreline, WA 98133 .
