Alfred Red was granted his angel wings and departed this life very peacefully at the age of 72 on the morning of August 8, 2019 at the Renton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Alfred was born on December 23, 1946 in Independence, Louisiana to loving parents, Mother Louella Harrington Red and father Emerson Red Sr. Alfred moved to Washington State at the age of nine with his parents and younger siblings. They first settled in Renton, Washington and then later relocated to Seattle’s Central District where he was raised up on 29th and Jackson. Alfred attended Renton and Seattle Public Schools and after high school graduation joined the US Army.
Alfred was brought up in the Church in Louisiana and after moving to Seattle, he attended Sunday school, played drums, and even sang with the Group the Heavenly Echoes at the late bishop RJ Causey’s Church where his mother was a member. Alfred became a member in the early 90’s of Beacon Hill Baptist Church who at that time was under the leadership of the Late Dr. Robert Houston. He would always tell his family he was always praying for everyone. Alfred was a passionate, loving, caring, and devoted father, grandfather, and son.
His interests included fishing, drawing, cooking, and just having a good time. Alfred had a special love for cooking. At any given time he could and was always willing to throw down on a country style breakfast, lunch, or a southern style Soul food dinner. Alfred would often get teased about it taking him all day to finish cooking, but best believe when he finished cooking that meal, everyone knew it would be worth the wait and be all smiles.
Alfred was the oldest of nine children. He had a natural nurturing spirit and was always willing to help his parents out in any way he could even helping care for his younger siblings and they all looked up to their Big Bro. Alfred loved people and meeting new people. He could put a smile on everyone’s face he encountered and no matter your age, color, or size he would make it a point to say hello or ask you how your day was going. He was a great friend to all.
Alfred was a Jack of all trades. He worked hard and had many occupations. Alfred enjoyed and took pride in detailing cars and trucks and he even opened his own Detail Shop. Alfred worked all the way up until his health wouldn’t allow him to anymore. Alfred fought a very courageous fight battling his health conditions and he always remained in good spirits and never complained through it all, He stayed in prayer and dealt with it like a champ. He truly loved his family and had a very close bond with his loving daughter Afrika who loved her father unconditionally. She was truly a Daddy’s Girl as she stood right by his side. Alfred was always thinking of his mother and he always would check in with her to make sure momma had everything she needed. Alfred loved and was so proud of his grandchildren and he enjoyed every moment and outing he’d spend with them, they all loved him dearly and often they’d get a good laugh out of Grandpa Red. He was always concerned about his family and wanted to make sure everyone was alright and had everything they needed.
Alfred met and married the love of his life Lennie Lee Beauchamp (deceased) in the early 70’s and to that union they welcomed their first child, a beautiful baby girl named Afrika Tenisha Red. In later years, Alfred met Deborah Stephens (deceased) and they had Alfred’s second child, a son named Donatello Alfred Red-Stephens (deceased). Alfred was also like a father to some who considered him Dad. Alfred loved all his children and he tried to be the best Father he could be.
Alfred was full of life and he got a joy by watching others be happy. Alfred kept it real, he was straight up and honest but would tell you just like it is whether you wanted to hear it or not. Alfred inflicted love on all who knew him and all those who were fortunate enough to have known him and spend time with him will greatly miss him. Alfred loved music especially Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, and Gospel. He always liked nice clothes and kept well-dressed from head to toe, he had to be right. Before and during his lengthy illness his daughter and grandchildren were always there assuring that Dad-D-O and Grandpa Red’s every need was met and that he was well cared for.
In Alfred’s last years, he was blessed with a Mercedes Benz Van that he was so proud of and he even nick named it “Black Pearl”. He enjoyed riding through town listening to Old School/Gospel Music with his family and enjoying the Scenic Views. Alfred would almost always make it a point to drive through his “old Hood”(Central District) as he would say he enjoyed watching the changes and hoping to run into some of his old buddies.
Alfred was preceded in death by his father Emerson Red Sr, son Donatello Red-Stephens, step-father Alex Honory, and three brothers Timothy B Red, Larry D Red, and Emerson Red Jr, ex-wife Lennie Beauchamp, and son’s mother Deborah Stephens.
Alfred leaves to mourn and cherish his memories: mother Louella Honory, one daughter Afrika T Red (Brad), six grandchildren Khyron Street, Lennié Street, Sierrah Street, Londen Street, Serenity Red-Stephens, and Saleh Red-Stephens, two sisters Catherine McFerrin (David), Dlisa Sims, and three brothers Stanley L Red, Bruce Red, and Leroy Red all of Seattle, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, great nephews, and extended family and friends.
