Charles "Charlie" Andrew Crump, was born in Chattanooga, TN on April 3, 1934 to Walter S. and Alva B. Crump. He had four siblings; Walter, Patsy, Michael “David”, and Kerry. His father was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U. S. Air Force, so the family relocated to numerous locations in the U. S. and Japan.
He graduated from high school in San Francisco, CA, and he followed his father’s military path by enlisting in the U. S. Air Force at the age of 18. His military specialty was communications. He was stationed in Japan on three separate occasions from 1953 to 1968. He met his wife, Ryoko Mikami, in Japan. They were married on January 9, 1959 in Sapporo, Japan. When Charlie was stationed in Burns, OR. he and his wife welcomed a daughter named Nina. The family also resided in Altus, OK, Cheyenne, WY and Colorado Springs, CO.
Charlie had to leave his family behind when he was stationed in Shemya, Alaska and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia each for one year. He retired as a Technical Sergeant from the U. S. Air Force in Cheyenne, WY after 20 years of active duty as a Communications Supervisor. He received the Air Force Good Conduct, Longevity, and Commendation awards.
The family moved to Seattle, WA and Charlie worked civil service in the same line of communications work for the Department of the Navy, Sandpoint Naval Station, until its impending closure. He officially retired at the age of 62. He enjoyed projects around the house, indulging in his wife’s Japanese cooking, and spending time with two of his brothers who also resided in Washington State. He was an avid reader, listened to opera, classical music, and classic country and had a vast collection of books, music, and movies. He also enjoyed eating his numerous snacks and having a cocktail on occasion while watching old movies and British murder mysteries. He could be surprisingly comedic at times.
Charlie passed away on May 19, 2023 after complications from a heart attack and progressing Parkinson’s disease. He was a devoted husband, father, and brother.
He is survived by his wife Ryoko, and daughter Nina. Son-in-law Tony A. Garcia, and step grandson Tony I. Garcia. Cousin Donald Mawhinney from Wyoming. Five nieces Debbie, Cathy, Ruth, Peggy and Laura from Florida. Nephews David Michael also from Florida, and John Walter from N. Carolina.
May he rest in peace and be remembered as the kind and thoughtful person that he was to family and everyone he met. We love you!!
