Charles left Johnstown to join the US Army where he served as an Army Medic for over 23 years. He spent 11 years stationed throughout Europe and served in Korea and Japan as well. It was during these years he experienced the most memorable times of his life. From the beauty of the canals in Venice to the tragic events of walking on Normandy Beach the day after D-Day to walking through a German concentration camp after the war ended.
Charles earned a Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Purple Heart. While working in a US Army hospital in Japan he met and married his wife of 57 years, Ine.
Charles retired from the Army in 1966 with the rank of Master Sergeant/First Sergeant (E-8). He settled into civilian life in Seattle, WA where he and Ine raised their three children on Queen Anne hill. After retiring from Pinkerton's Security, Charles enjoyed road trips exploring the beautiful National Parks throughout the West and Southwest United States.
Charles was a wonderful husband, father, grand/great grandfather, brother, and uncle. He was an avid football fan and loved to cheer on his Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers. Charles loved the outdoors, fishing and gardening.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Caroline Schnurr, brother Paul Schnurr, sister Shirley Horvath, and son in-law John Brosio. He is survived by his brother Jim Schnurr, sisters Carole Lebosky and Sally Timpe, his wife Ine, son Stephen Schnurr (Tacoma), daughters Stephanie Brosio (Seattle) and Caroline Zacher (San Gabriel, CA), grandkids Brandon and Alyssa Romeo, Halle and Presley Zacher, great grandson Bennett Nakatsu, and numerous nieces and nephews.
