Clyde was born in Stevens County Kansas, the youngest of eight children. He attended two one-teacher schools, Rose Valley Elementary for four years and also Bethel Elementary. He attended Hugoton High and graduated in May 1945 from Liberal High School. During these early years at home he helped by feeding the farm animals, working in the vegetable garden, milking the cows and turning the milk separator to get the cream from the milk. As he got older he progressed to driving the tractor and working in the fields. Sunday's during the summer months were special since after church they would drive to the ice plant to get a block of ice. They placed the ice on the bumper of the car and drove home using the ice to freeze ice cream later to be consumed after a meal of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and chicken gravy. He was a freshman in high school when Pearl Harbor was attacked. During this period of war, he remained on the farm continuing to help make provisions available for his family but also for others, collecting scrap metal and taking to a collection site to be used in the war effort. He had three brothers and a brother-in-law who were all in military service. He was grateful that none of his family was lost to this or any other wars. In March 1946, he enlisted in the Navy V-5 program and served there until July 27, 1948. It was during this time that he attended University of New Mexico, Albuquerque and later Kansas State University. In the fall of 1949, he enrolled at Friends University, Wichita Kansas and completed a B.A. Degree in math graduating in June 1951. Furthering his education, he obtained an M.A. degree in Mathematics from Municipal University, now called Wichita State University graduating in June 1953. A few years after marrying Leona Mary Binford on December 23, 1951, he entered Army basic training at Camp Chaffee and was eventually assigned to the Continental Army Command, Office of Special Weapons Developments Director at Fort Bliss, Texas. He served there as a private until May 1956 when he resigned and joined The Boeing Company in Wichita as a Senior Engineer. In January 1963, Clyde moved his beloved wife and four children from Wichita, Kansas to Seattle, Washington continuing his work with Boeing. There he worked on a number of projects ending with his final few years at Ridgecrest California at the China Lake Navel Weapons facility. He retired in 1993 after 37 years with Boeing. After retirement, Clyde spent a few years volunteering for Wycliffe Bible Translators teaching computer classes while Leona helped with hospitality. Together they were blessed by the opportunity to travel to Israel in 1998. While in Israel, they were baptized in the Jordan River. They were able to travel to Europe in 2000 with a group from George Fox University and cruised to Alaska in 2004.
Clyde grew up in a Christian home. Clyde's parents both had a strong faith in Christ and modeled His love for others. They attended Bethel Friends church in Hugoton, Kansas. Clyde came to know the Lord early in life and was a faithful servant who walked daily with his Savior. He served in many capacities throughout his life and his greatest desire was to know the Lord and serve Him by serving others.
Clyde and Leona served the Lord faithfully as a couple in the churches they attended, as the director and general handyman at Kinder Kampus Day Care ( at Friends Memorial Church), as well as at Wycliffe Bible Translators after retirement. Clyde and Leona were faithful members of the Friends Church in Wichita and then Friends Memorial in Seattle and finally at North Seattle Alliance. He served as an Elder in the Friends church as well as at North Seattle Alliance. He continued to serve after Leona went home to be with the Lord in 2005. He served at North Seattle Alliance as Chairman of the Governing Board during a difficult transition period in the church as well as serving the seniors in the Sojourners Sunday School class and Primetime.
