Dan was born in Seattle to Darrell and Bernice Day. Dan’s early childhood in Seattle involved a society where a boy had the freedom to roam. Around eleven, he was given a red boat named the Bucky Buck, enabling him to travel around Lake Washington and up the slough, which required pulling the boat through the shallows, to Lake Sammamish. Dan was involved in both church and city sports and sung in both church and school choirs. Dan and his friend Lynden would ride their bikes far and wide including to the Green River to camp and fish. On one visit his parents had only to follow the detritus of two teenage boys to locate the campsite.
Dan was a good student and involved in student government. He was always working on his high school Spanish as it proved useful while communicating with Spanish-speaking employees. At fourteen, Dan began to work with his Father, General Manager of Blackstock Lumber, every Saturday morning and a month in the summer, earning money for his first car. On his sixteenth birthday with a driver’s license secured, Dan drove his 1952 Chevy to work where a delivery truck was waiting. With an early work dismissal, Dan worked at Blackstock all through high school remaining after graduation, retiring as General Manager after fifty years in 2006. After a valiant attempt at retiring for a year, Dan returned to Blackstock retiring in 2015. Dan was past president of The Seattle Lumberman’s Club and the Associated Lumber Dealers of Seattle.
After a number of years as a bachelor, Dan married Georgia Kravik; they would have been married forty-two years in August. After some overseas trips, Dan’s favorite mode of travel was long driving trips, which included travel across both US and Canada and various areas in between. They particularly enjoyed their trips to Dawson City and Yellow Knife.
Dan suffered from heart disease succumbing on March 12, 2022. Despite his health history, we were stunned, as up until two days before his death he was riding his exercise bike. He was a vigorous and vital man with a sunny disposition; Dan would have been eighty-one April 15.
Dan was beloved by his wife Georgia Kravik Day; his four stepdaughters, Roxanne (Kerry) Koch, Rochelle Smith, Coby (Richard) Eddy and Stephanie (Ron) Singler. He leaves four adored grandchildren, Ray Koch, Austin Eddy, Max and Macie Singler. He will be dearly missed by his family, Brother Jim, and Sister-in-law Barbara as well as many relatives and friends.
