I was reminiscing with a friend about my old computer science professor Dan but couldn’t remember his last name. I scoured through the North Seattle College website and eventually found him. When looking through to find his contact information I discovered the accident and his tragic fate. Thanks so much for what you did for me Dan. I’m sorry I didn’t reach out sooner to thank you. 

I got to know Dan when he was a graduate student in the Linguistics Department at UW. He was thoughtful, talented, and fun. As a man of many talents and interests, he often lent his skills and efforts to fellow students and to faculty in the department, always with a smile and a sense of humor. He and I stayed in touch as he went on to pursue his true passions: teaching and music. He was a lovely man and a dear friend. My heartfelt condolences to his family and to his large community of friends.

Dan was a delightful and charming person.  So talented, so brilliant, so unassuming.  I didn’t even know a quarter of all his accomplishments.  He lived his life fully.  So blessed by God.

It was my great privilege to sing with him as a fellow chorister in the Cathedral Choir of St. James.   

Rest in peace, Dan.  You are gone too soon.

I remember Dan as a delightfully upbeat and kind person.  He was one of the RCIA team at St. James when I was going through as a candidate.  He brought a humor and depth to our discernment process, kept me on the right path, and was an ideal representative of one who lives their faith.  He also made everyone feel welcome wherever he was.  I also remember his considerable contribution to the choir and as a frequent cantor.  The Choir of Angels now have a member to keep them in tune.  

Dan was really great. He sang the "Ave Maria" for free at the wedding of Vanessa, a friend,  . He was always willing to help and was really humble. I did not know he was 64, he was such a youthful and joyful person. I will miss him. He is an example to me. I want to be as dedicated and kind as him. I am sure the Lord will take good care of him.

In St. Peter’s Rome you said “Yes!”
Asked to translate a war in Italian
between the Vatican Liturgy and Music Offices
just before the All Souls’ Liturgy, 
to decide which Psalm you would have to sing
in eight minutes.
Yes!

Dan and I shared many moments of prayer, learning, and liturgy. RCIA, cantoring at my wedding and my child's baptism...the list goes on. But my favorite memory is him at the piano in our home after at a dnner party, accompanying me as I sang an Alanis Morissette song. Rest in peace, Dan. You touched so many lives.  You are in our hearts.

Dan was such a warm guiding presence to Catholic converts going through RCIA. And what a beautiful voice. It meant a lot to me personally to know a fellow Japanese American convert, to share an understanding of how powerfully the Church spoke to something in our common experience. 

Dan was a fellow staff member when I served as an associate pastor at St. James Cathedral in the early to mid-1980s. I was appreciative of his positivity; I can still see his smile and hear his laughter. His beautiful voice added immeasurably to the prayer of the Cathedral liturgies. I feel blessed that our paths crossed.

Dan and I shared an office as part-time faculty "back in the day" at North Seattle College. We had great conversations while grading or prepping for classes. Dan was kind, gentle, and his faith meant a lot to him. He was dedicated to teaching, and his students. I remember visiting him in the hospital, several times while he battled pneumonia. It was great when he was able to return to the classroom (nearly a miracle). I wish he could have stayed with us longer. He will be missed.
