Doris Ann Snodgrass died peacefully on August 4, 2020 with her daughters, Susanne Warnock and Marylee Penhollow at her side. Mom was born February 12, 1923 in Prineville, Oregon. She spent her early years living in Longview with her parents, George Sherry and Dorothy Ireland Sherry and her sister, Patricia. The memories of fishing with her family on the Colombia River were often shared with fondness. Mom along with her sister and three close friends climbed Mount Hood. She was in her late teens and her stories of that experience instilled in us our love of adventure in the great outdoors. After moving to Southeast Portland, Doris attended Franklin High School. It was certainly a lucky day when her freshman English class was seated alphabetically. She did not know it at the time, but this set the course that shaped the rest of her life. Seated directly behind her was a very handsome young man named Thomas Snodgrass. They became high school sweethearts and married in 1944 during WWII. Mom traveled to Manhattan, Kansas to marry Dad on her twenty-first birthday. Monsignor Lucky officiated and blessed them with a glorious future. Together they had five children, Sherry Snodgrass Bell, Kathleen Snodgrass Crater (deceased), Marylee Snodgrass Penhollow, Susanne Snodgrass Warnock and Patrick Snodgrass.
She loved large family dinners, her pets, sewing, gardening, family camping trips, traveling, reading and her growing family. Doris is survived by 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She is lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews. A special love for our cousins, Barbara Schiewe Bolstad and DeeDee Schiewe Gaul developed after they moved across the street at an early age. She always considered them her daughters too. Together our parents modeled a strong commitment to faith and family for 70 years. We are eternally grateful for her love and kindness.
Due to the social distancing recommendations, a tribute to our mom will be held in a private gathering in the future.
All are welcome to sign the online guestbook below and add any messages or stories for the Snodgrass family.
