Ellen was born to Finnish homesteaders Peter and Lydia Hiltunen on April 29th 1921 in Toimi, Minnesota. She often told stories of growing up on a self-sufficient farm with her five siblings Tom, Robert, Siiri, Donald and Irene.
At a young age she traveled the country with her friend Faye. Their travels led to Seattle where Ellen met her future husband Roy Erickson while working at Lowell's (then Manning's) in the Pike Place Market.
Ellen will be remembered for her love of family and friends, her Christian faith, and her willingness to be of help whenever others were in need. She was, at heart, a country girl, and she found great pleasure in gardening, baking, sewing and knitting, and in all aspects of the great outdoors. She was an avid traveler, and visited friends and family throughout the United States, and in Europe and Asia. Ellen was also an accomplished Scrabble player, and took particular glee in surprising her opponents with a well-placed, esoteric word.
Ellen is survived by her brother Robert (Aili), her daughter Eleanor Frohning (Ken), son Karl Erickson (Laurel), grandson John Frohning (Rebecca), granddaughter Riley Green Miller, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Her family would like to thank her caregivers at the Foundation House, her doctor Ann Greaney, Pastor Julie and the Lutheran Memorial Church, and the support of her extended network of friends.
In lieu of flowers Ellen requested donations to Seattle Children's Hospital.
