After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Seattle, Eugene honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1957, followed by service in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. On January 15, 1960, he married the love of his life, Nancy, at Lake City Church in Seattle. He was 25 and she was 22, beginning a marriage that would last 65 years.
Eugene worked at BROWN & HALEY candy company, where he took great pride in his work—famously saying, “Chocolate is a necessity; it tickles the brain that controls intelligence.” Later, he founded Lake City Tile and Carpet, a business he built with pride and dedication. His craftsmanship led him to work on many notable projects, including Jim Zorn’s home on Mercer Island and the original Boeing Flight Museum, where he installed Italian rubber tile in parts of the interior.
A passionate golfer, Gene spent several years as a golf pro in Palm Springs and maintained a 9 handicap. He had a remarkable ability to analyze a golf swing and offer a few key tips that could transform a player’s game.
Eugene is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; their sons, Evan and Alan; granddaughters, Alyssa, Caitlyn, and Hailey; and his sister, Pat Wood. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Antoinette Addington, and his brother, Dennis Addington.
He will be deeply missed.
