With reverence and deep affection, we celebrate the life and legacy of Elder James Edward Smith Sr., a man whose unwavering faith, steadfast love, and tireless service left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Elder Smith entered eternal rest on October 3, 2025, at the age of 95, surrounded by the love of his family and the grace of God.
Born in El Paso, Texas, on July 31, 1930, James was the fourth of six children born to Ruben and Hazel Smith. From humble beginnings, he grew into a man of great character and conviction. On June 17, 1948, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. After completing boot camp, he was stationed at Treasure Island in San Francisco and later served aboard the U.S.S. Philippine Sea CV-47 Aircraft Carrier. He was honorably discharged on June 17, 1952, having served with pride and dedication.
James’s true calling, however, was in service to the Lord. A faithful servant of Jesus Christ, he devoted many years to ministry within the Methodist Church, shepherding multiple congregations with compassion, wisdom, and humility. His spiritual leadership culminated in his promotion to Presiding Elder—a role he cherished deeply and considered one of his greatest life achievements.
Beyond the pulpit, Elder Smith was a man of many talents and passions. He found joy in mentoring youth as a track and field coach and substitute high school teacher, always encouraging excellence and perseverance. His presence was a source of strength, his words a balm, and his example a guiding light.
Elder Smith was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby C. Smith, with whom he shared a beautiful life and raised five children. No matter where he went or who he met, James talked about his children. He was a proud father and a supportive dad. He loved his children to the moon and back!
James E. Smith, Sr. leaves to mourn a devoted sister, Ophelia Harvey (Ulysses), and his children: Ruthie L. Wiley (Al), Regina L. Bullock, James E. Smith Jr. (Denise), John E. Smith (Phyllis), and Rodney S. Smith (Cynthia). His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Terence, Larry, Timika, Karimah, Nakia, Kedrick, Jason, Caalin, James III, Rodney Jr., Cameron, Rashon, Shaylin, and Ashlin; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family too numerous to name.
Elder James Edward Smith Sr. lived a life of purpose, grace, and unwavering devotion. His memory will be cherished, his teachings remembered, and his spirit felt in every life he touched.
Well done, good and faithful servant. You have entered into the joy of your Lord.
