Joan Ellen Dash passed away November 22, 2018 at Horizon House in Seattle. She was 93 years old. She was born in 1925 in Brooklyn, New York, to Samuel and Louise Zeiger. Mom graduated first in her class from Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. She graduated from Barnard College; was on the staff of the Barnard News and was known to her friends as "Dashlet." Mom married Jay Gregory Dash in 1944 while he was in the Navy. In 1950 soon after son Michael was born, the family moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico, where Dad was employed as a physicist at Los Alamos Laboratories. Liz and Tony were born in Los Alamos, and Mom began her writing career there. The family moved to Seattle in 1960. Mom was a prolific writer, with seven books of history and biography published. One example is We Shall Not Be Moved/The Women's Factory Strike of 1909. Her short stories appeared in national magazines, including Seventeen, Family Circle and Redbook. Mom was a marvelous cook, Scrabble player and collector of Native American art, and possessed a wicked sharp wit. She was preceded in death by husband Greg Dash, brother Richard Zeiger, daughter-in-law Dodie Woodbridge, and brother-in-law Bob Dash. Survivors include children Michael Dash, Anthony Dash and Liz Bottman (Jeff); sister-in-law Natalie Zeiger, grandchildren Nate and Sam Bottman, nephew Steven Zeiger (Tali) and niece Lisa Zeiger Schwartz (Richard), plus many dear friends. Thank you so much to the kind staff at Horizon House for their loving care during Mom and Dad's years there, and especially during Mom's last illness.
