Jack was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 40 years, Terry Bursett, and by his parents, Ted and Mary. He is survived by his sister Frances Mead (Rick Mead); his nieces Terri Pauly and Callie Bryan Godiska; his daughters Katherine Bursett (Byron Pimms), Kate Tredway, Celina Jennings, and Megan Juan (Tim Juan); and five grandchildren: Quinn Kondrak (father Kuri Kondrak), Isabella and Ciara Armstrong (father Myles Armstrong), and Leila and Eva Juan.
Jack grew up in Seattle and earned a degree in Statistics from the University of Washington. He joined Washington Dental Service early in its history and spent his entire career there, retiring at 80 as Senior Vice President of the actuarial department.
He and Terry shared a deep friendship and a rhythm of quiet pleasures: weekends at their LaConner cabin, movies with popcorn, time on the boat, years of traveling together, and many, many games of cribbage. Her passing left an emptiness that never really left him.
Jack loved trains, animals, classic novels, the Mariners, classic rock, and plain cheeseburgers—just the meat, the cheese, and the bun. He didn’t chase attention, but if you ended up in a conversation with him, you’d remember it. He had a quick mind, an irreverent sense of humor, strong opinions, and usually swore at least once.
He didn’t boast, but he had much to be proud of. His nearly 35 years of sobriety were a quiet strength. His connection to Alcoholics Anonymous was lifelong and unwavering, and he built lasting friendships through the program. Even when he could no longer drive, his AA pals made sure he made it to meetings twice a week.
We’re also deeply grateful to the staff and community at Aegis of Laurelhurst for the kindness, care, and respect they showed Jack during his time there.
We’ll remember him with love, gratitude and plenty of laughter.
