April 4, 1944 – March 11, 2025
John Gardner Copernoll, 80, of Redmond, WA, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on April 4, 1944, John dedicated his life to family, faith, hard work, and the great outdoors. He spent much of his career as a captain for the Washington State Ferries, ensuring the safe passage of countless travelers while embracing his deep love for the water.
In 1999, John experienced a profound recommitment to Christ, which led him to actively serve in his church community. He found great joy in volunteering in many capacities—serving as a board member, driving the church bus, working in the nursery, providing altar flowers, and taking part in the TLC Bible study group. His faith was central to his life, and he lived it out through service, kindness, and devotion to others.
John also had a passion for woodworking, gardening, and fishing, spending many peaceful hours crafting, planting, and casting his line. But nothing brought him more happiness than being with his family, especially attending his grandchildren’s sports activities and cheering them on from the sidelines.
John is survived by his children, Ron, Bryan, and Heather; his sister, Susan; his brother, Steve; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was a cherished father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and cousin leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and service.
A memorial service will be held at Washington Cathedral on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 2:00 PM with a reception to follow after service (12300 Redmond Woodinville Rd NE, Redmond, WA 98952).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Washington Cathedral Church in John’s memory.
The family would like to thank the Smith family for their many years of love, care, and support for John.
John’s life was a testament to faith, family, and the joy of simple moments. His presence will be deeply missed, but his love and example will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
