

Jack was born on April 14th, 1939, to Erwin and Stella Meyers.
Jack is survived by his wife of 59 years, Vivian Marguerite; two daughters and one son-in-law, Nadine and Erin Buskirk of Springfield, MO and Sarah Meyers of Renton, WA; and one brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Terry Vanderschuere of Colorado Springs, CO. He is also survived by wonderful cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Jack is preceded in death by his mother, Stella Sarah (Meyers) Vanderschuere, father Erwin “Freddie” Meyers, who died in WWII, and step-father Charles “Chuck” Vanderschuere.
Jack went to college and then followed in his dad’s footsteps and joined the Navy. While in the Navy, he had many tours of duty including service in Vietnam as an advisor to the RVN Naval Forces and commanded a guided missile destroyer, the USS Towers, DDG-9. He had a successful 30 years serving his country, retiring as Captain. After retiring from the Navy, he worked in a shipyard in Bellingham and then for the Marine Highway System in Juneau, Alaska as Operations Manager of the Alaska State Ferries. After officially retiring in 2005, he and Vivian built their dream retirement home on Camano Island, WA.
Jack was active in retirement, involving himself in Rotary, and was an avid photographer of birds. He had several other hobbies, including fishing with his boat, the Co-Ho-Ho, and cooking. He was also a master of the grill! He absolutely loved to feed people.
Jack was a man of integrity and had a quiet faith in his Lord, Jesus. Jack loved his immediate and extended family and friends dearly. We want to thank Jack’s caretakers in the last years of his life at the Chateau at Valley Center in Renton for their excellence and loving care, as well as his Hospice care team that were equally amazing. Jack will be missed as a husband, father, brother, cousin, uncle and friend.
A private family graveside service for Jack will be held Friday, August 18th, 2023 from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery, 11111 Aurora Avenue N., Seattle, WA 98133. Following the graveside service, there will be a private family reception from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the Evergreen Washelli Tribute Center.
