John Daniel Mitchell died October 11, 2001, a few blocks from the place where he was born on November 19, 1919.
While a student at Broadway High School, his love of astronomy led him to build a telescope that is still in use. He studied chemistry at the University of Washington until times hit hard. Marriage to Mae Dennis came in 1942, sons Jim and Tom grew while he undertook professional photography and then educated himself as an engineer. His many awards during 41 years at Boeing testify to his ability to ?work through people?, while he spent his off hours on Puget Sound with Tyee Yacht Club. After retiring in 1984, he began a whole new career repairing and selling yachts. His ?free time? was spent boating and as treasurer of his church and Secretary of Boeing Management Assoc. Gold Club. He also returned to astronomy, earning civic awards for his creative ways of teaching youth and seniors in Seattle?s schools and community colleges. His wife, children, grandchildren, students, and friends will treasure memories of peering through telescopes and cruising on Puget Sound with John.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, October 16, at Evergreen-Washelli 206-362-5200. Memorial donations may be made to Tyee Yacht Club.
