Kirkland, WA. He was born April 12, 1921, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of John A. and Frances D. (nee McFadden)
O'Hara. On August 29, 1942, he married Dorothy M. (Dottie) King, in Philadelphia, PA, who passed away on
December 27, 2015. John O'Hara (aka Jack) graduated from St. Joseph Preparatory High School (Philadelphia) in 1938 and
received a B.S. degree in Accounting from St. Joseph College (Philadelphia) in 1942. Following graduation
from college he worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation before enlisting in the Navy in December
1942. He was transferred to the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in February 1943
and upon receiving an Industrial Administration degree was transferred for permanent duty as Assistant
Supply Officer, Naval Air Station Bermuda. Following his discharge from active duty in April 1946 he
attended University of Pennsylvania Law School during the day, while teaching high school English and
Mathematics at night for the Philadelphia Public School System. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania
and Federal Bars and practiced law in Philadelphia until 1950 when he joined Piasecki Helicopter
Company, later named Vertol Aircraft Corporation. In 1960 the Boeing Company acquired Vertol, and in
1961 he became Director of Administration for Boeing-Vertol with the responsibility for Contracts,
Finance, Legal, and Industrial relations and Planning. In 1963, with his wife and thirteen children in tow,
he moved from Boeing-Vertol in Philadelphia to Boeing Corporate headquarters in Seattle WA. He
retired from Boeing in 1987 as Director of Contract Policy.
Since moving to Washington, he was on the board of directors for Seattle Archdiocesan Catholic Youth
Organization and Seattle Youth Symphony. He also served for three years as director of the Seattle
Urban League. He was a devoted Catholic and active member of the choir at Sacred Heart Church in
Bellevue and then at St. Francis Church in Chelan. He was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Church in
Woodinville at the time of his death.
Jack and Dottie, his beloved wife of 73 years, were devoted to their family. Their house, whether it was
in Philadelphia PA, Medina WA, or Chelan WA was always open to their extended family and many
friends. Their children all have fond memories of Sunday dinners and holidays in Philadelphia when
their house was filled with a loving family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Laughter, good
food, singing and dancing were enjoyed by all.
The family traditions grew in WA as numerous grandchildren emerged on the scene. Family parties and
games sometimes lasted until wee hours of the morning. Jack was always the heart of the party, leading
the sing-alongs with his perfect pitch and booming voice. He made the weddings of his children and
grandchildren extra special by serenading the bride and groom with his rendition of "Sunrise, Sunset".
Jack and Dottie spent most of their final 20 years together in their beautiful retirement house -
"Teetering on the Brink" - overlooking Lake Chelan in central Washington State, where they continued
to host innumerable friends, guests and wonderful family gatherings. Many have been lucky enough to
have had "happy hour" with them while overlooking the lake and hearing tales of their love story, with
Jack making Dottie's Manhattan after she finished her crossword puzzle and tea. Their devotion to each
other was evident as they sang "Our Love Affair" whenever they had an audience, which was quite often
as they were always surrounded by family, friends and many "adopted persons".
Jack touched the lives of so many - far more than just his enormous and wonderful family - with his
unending kindness, generosity, wit, humor, and grace. He had a way of making everyone around him
feel welcome, wanted, and important - even perfect strangers. He was everything one could ask for in a
husband, father, grandparent, brother, uncle, friend, in-law or person.
There will be a Funeral Mass on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at 12 noon, at St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic
Church, 17856 NE Woodinville--Duvall Rd. Woodinville, WA 98077. A luncheon reception will follow
immediately at the Redmond Marriott Hotel located at Redmond Town Center where family and friends
will be welcome to celebrate and share stories.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sisters of Immaculate Heart of Mary.
