Larry Allen Fletcher

Larry was born April 1, 1938 in Orofino, Idaho to James and Marie Fletcher. He claimed Yakima as his hometown; after high school he attended Central Washington State College (then) earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education. He is survived by a wide circle of friends here and throughout the United States and extended family in Yakima, Washington.

Then he began a 30 + year career in the classrooms of Washington. He served in Ferndale and Hoquiam before being hired by Seattle. In the summer of 1967, he moved into his current apartment and began his Seattle career at Wilson Junior High School, teaching English/Language Arts. In 1971 he relocated to Mercer Junior High and served as department chair for a period of time. He again was a mainstay of the English department. Larry moved back into the ‘new’ Franklin in September 1990 and retired in June 1991.

Larry went back to school at Edmonds Community College and earned his certification in drug/alcohol counseling and pursued this second community-centered vocation for 10 + years. In addition, he spent over 330 volunteer hours at Providence Hospital (Everett) in the Sexual Assault Support Unit.

Larry was an extensive European traveler, spending many summers on the continent. His one regret was never being able to visit Egypt whose history was of particular interest to him. When such traveling became too difficult for him, he found Elderhostel to be a welcome alternative. He attended over 30 Elderhostels, primarily in the United States.

The theater arts in Seattle had a strong supporter and contributor in Larry; his taste was eclectic and he shared his enthusiasm often with friends. He enjoyed his symphony concerts and other musical events. KCTS and Masterpiece Theater were also hobbies. In fact, he had just finished watching ’Downton Abbey’ on his personal copy of Season 5.

He also strongly supported the Seattle Retired Teachers’ Association in a variety of ways. The scholarship program sponsored by that group was close to Larry’s heart. In that spirit we ask that donations be made, in his name, to
