Martin Arnold Rotter aka Cappy was born in Bremerton, Washington on January 27, 1936. Early on he was raised along with his ten other siblings and cousins in Silverdale, Washington. In Silverdale, he along with his siblings and cousins received their early education at the nearby one room schoolhouse. With their fathers declining health the family moved to Stanwood and later to Wenatchee. After the death of their father, the family moved to Seattle where he attended Ballard High School graduating in 1955. After graduation he enlisted in the Navy serving as an Machinist's mate on a LST that transported cargo in the far East. After being honorably discharged he was hired by Industrial Crating and Packing, where he was employed for over forty years. He soon purchased a home in Ballard and thereafter married his sweetheart and wife of 53 years Arline.
In their Ballard forever home they raised four children Danny, Paul, Cherri and Kevin. After a long day at work, Dad was drafted daily to play street football with neighborhood kids. Not wasting dwindling daylight or any opportunity to play with his kids, Dad played quarterback for both teams in his green work uniform, earning him the nickname, Jolly Green Giant. During the summers he enjoyed spending his vacations camping, hiking and fishing with family and visiting relatives in Eastern Washington. He was a lifetime Mariners and Seahawks fan and attended many of their earliest games in the Kingdome. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and singing “Wheels on the Bus” to his great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death on November 19, 2024 by his parents Margaret and Benjamin, his beloved wife Arline and siblings Bill, Caroline (Sis), Ben, Bob, Jim, Marie, Ray, Judy, Dick and survived by brother Mike. He is cherished by his children, Danny (Mary), Paul, Cherri (Mark) and Kevin, his dear grandchildren, William (Breanna), Matthew (Annabelle), Zane (Rachel), Nicholas and Elise and precious great granddaughters, June and Lily.
A celebration of life will occur this spring. In lieu of flowers remembrances can be made to The Salvation Army.
