

Born March 1, 1923 in Belcourt, North Dakota, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Short) La Fontaine; the seventh son of 10 children. He was an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. As a young man he worked as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps building roads in the Black Hills of South Dakota. A member of the "greatest generation" he served on the USS Independence as a Radioman during the Pacific Campaign in WWII.
After discharge from the Navy he moved to Seattle and married Edla Johnson. They were married 28 years and raised four children, Allan, Kenneth, Ramona and Kathleen in Edmonds, WA. He worked at Boeing for 35 years as an electrician on various military and commercial airplanes, retiring in 1985. Over his lifetime he enjoyed many activities including camping, hunting and fishing.
A wonderful family man he enjoyed his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A great storyteller, he was a native speaker of his tribal language. He will be remembered for his great wit and sense of humor.
Preceded in death by his first wife, Edla, and second wife, Mary Ann (Davies) La Fontaine; son, Kenneth; brothers Joseph, Alec, Louis (Chris), Fred, Gabe, Hank and Ernest; sister, Cecelia Hamley; great grandson Angus Menish; and other beloved family members.
Survived by sister, Alice Roussin; sisters-in-law, Gladys La Fontaine, Genevieve La Fontaine and Ella Larrick; son, Allan (Kathy); daughters Ramona (Joe) Menish and Kathleen (Bob) Gilbo; step sons Scott (Lynn) Davies, Tim (Val) Davies, and Elizabeth "Liz" Davies; grandsons Brian(Barb) Baanrud, Kevin (Marie) La Fontaine, Paul (Angela) and Jesse (Kedra) Menish, Ty (Corinne) Copp, Jon (Amanda) and Bobby Gilbo and Colin Davies; granddaughters, Penny (Kelly) Messer, Brenda(Daryl) King, Krista(Richard) La Fontaine-Williams, Melissa and Heather Gilbo; great grandsons Jacob, Chase and Elijah Baanrud, Alex King, Casey Menish, Ty, Jr. and Devin Copp, Joe Williams and Cameron Baker; great granddaughters Elizabeth Bannrud, Kimberly King, Peyton, Isabella, Eira, Catriona ,Matilda Menish, Rhiannon Whitney; and several nieces and nephews.
He will especially be missed by his long time love and companion Jeanie Harris of Redmond, Washington.
