Richard was born and raised in the Bronx. New York was imprinted on his heart, but he was driven to see the world, inspired by cross-country road trips with his family as a child.
After leaving New York, he received a degree from the University of Colorado in journalism. He started his career working for newspapers in Colorado and Idaho while freelancing for Gannett and the New York Times in the United States and internationally. He moved to Alaska in 1983 with his wife, when she was eight months pregnant with their first child.
In Alaska, Richard had a long, storied career as an investigative reporter for the Anchorage Daily News. For over 30 years he wrote countless articles about the people, places, and institutions of Alaska and beyond. His work helped to hold political leaders accountable to the people they served, and his unwavering passion for truth and storytelling contributed to a better-informed public. Richard also mentored several up-and-coming journalists to pass along his knowledge and strengthen the network of reporters in the state.
Richard loved exploring the outdoors with his family and friends. His backpacking, camping, and fishing adventures took him to remote corners of Alaska and the United States, and he never shied away from going off the beaten path.
This same spirit drove his desire to travel extensively in Europe, the Middle East, and Central and South America. Never one to shy away from taking a local bus or eating from street side vendors, he sought out unconventional itineraries, even if it needed to be accompanied by antibiotics.
Throughout all his lifelong journeys in his career, Alaska, and traveling, his generosity showed through. Whether it was driving all night to assist when a friend’s car broke down, snow blowing neighbors’ driveways, or explaining how to use the legal process to challenge a speeding ticket, Richard was there for his family and friends.
Richard is survived by his wife, daughter and son-in-law, son and daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, and sister.
