Date of Graveside Funeral: Saturday August 29, 2009
Richard Walter Weir was born at Swedish Hospital on September 27th, l925. In his younger years he was raised in Fremont near Ballard along with his brother John and his mother Carrie in the home of the boys' Grandfather and Grandmother Durr. In the coming years his mother would remarry our wonderful grandfather Lawrence Weir, and soon all would move to lower Queen Anne to start a wonderful life together. "Dick" and John would be lovingly pulled into the exciting adventures of sailing, fishing, camping, hunting, and exploring the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, especially Steward Island. Dad attended Alexander Hamilton and graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1942. During this time he was active in Baseball, Skiing, Golfing, Developing pictures with his Dad, Boating, even at the age of l3, coming in 3rd in the all-city Oswald Championships. After High School, Dad entered the service during World War 11. He was stationed in Italy and worked in the Signal Service Command, having become one of only three men to be chosen to attend radio school, attaining the rank of Sergeant and ending his military service in Italy at the U. S. Allied Force Headquarters. After the war our father moved back to Queen Ann and soon found a beautiful young lady that he asked to marry him. Dick and Arvella were married on July 24th, l948. During this time our father served the city of Seattle as a fireman with the Warren Avenue Station on Queen Anne Hill, and moved to a small home in Fremont. On October l8th, l949 Dad and Mom welcomed three little ones into the world; Mike, Mitch, and Michele. To accommodate the five of them, Dick and Arvella moved to Ballard to our family home. Because of the long hours as a fireman, and the demands of three active triplets, Dad began a career as a taxi cab driver and later a taxi cab owner with Grey Top Cabs, driving a Red, White, and Blue No. 50. In the Early 60's Dick decided to go back to his first love of Radio operations. Graduating with honors, Dad would find a job he loved very much. He worked for the Washington State Patrol for 24 years rising to the leadership position as the Law Enforcement Communications Systems Supervisor responsible for building communication towers throughout the state on many mountain tops. Returning to single life in the 70's, our father found Thelma Woods, his beloved companion of over thirty years. Together, they spent many years traveling throughout the United Stated in "The Taj". These were some of the happiest times of his retired years.
Dad was a quiet man, who deeply loved his family. His life was full and he gave so much to those he loved. His gentle unassuming strength, kindness, and loving heart will be missed, yet fondly remembered. Peace be with you Dad, we will always love you and hold you warmly in our hearts.
