Born in Seattle, WA in 1952 to Dick and Frances Yarington. Dick graduated from Blanchet High School in 1970 and continued on to the University of Washington. During his time at the UW he took time off to obtain his Funeral Director's license. He worked in this profession until he decided that he liked working with the living. He returned to the UW and completed his BA in political science. Dick worked as a real estate agent, census taker and a salesman in the freight forwarding industry. He then became a Bridge teacher. He enjoyed instructing his students in the art of contract Bridge. Dick took pleasure in their accomplishments as they mastered the game,
Dick enjoyed watching sports especially the Mariners, Seahawks and golf tournaments. Sadly, because of the weather delays of the British open, he did not live to see the final result. Every year he would take his nephew, Sean, to see the Mighty Ducks in Vancouver B.C
Richard loved playing golf. Other activities he enjoyed were fishing, bowling and piloting a small plane. His sister needed a partner to play in a Duplicate Bridge Game. Dick agreed to play after an hour lesson. Dick had found his passion. He played from that time in 1970 until his untimely death on July 20th 2015. His best finish was second in a National Bridge Championship in Philadelphia with Jackie Buroker in 1996. He has over a 100 regional titles to his name. He and his partner, Ken Scholes represented Distinct 19 in many North American Team and Pairs championships. As well as being a competitive player, he enjoyed a reputation as a gentleman and good sport.
Richard travelled to many different parts of North America to compete in Bridge Tournaments. He took advantage of this opportunity to partake of many different cuisines as well as the museums and attractions of the areas. He loved going to the Symphony in Seattle.
Richard is survived by his two sisters: Elizabeth(Patrick) and Mary(Marty). He will be missed by his nieces and nephews with whom he enjoyed a warm and caring relationship: Alek, Gillian, Bridgid and Sean. He is also survived by his devoted friend of 20 years, Jackie Buroker.
There will be a viewing on Monday, July 27th, from 5:00 pm to 8:00pm at Yarington Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Church in White Center at 1:00pm on Tuesday, July 28th. Following the Mass there will be a reception at Salty's at Alki. The family asks that donations be made to the Seattle Symphony or The ACBL Charity Foundation.
