Ritchie “Boy” Canda Apellanes was born on January 14, 1942 in the small town of Loay on the island of Bohol, Philippines. He was born to Castor and Teofila Apellanes, and was the 8th of their nine children. Ritchie migrated to the United States in June of 1967, taking a job with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration from 1968-1972, to build a foundation for the family he dreamed of growing in America. After those five years, in 1972, he went back to the Philippines to marry his sweetheart Salome Rabon on February 27th. Shortly after, both Ritchie and Salome left for America, choosing the beautiful Pacific Northwest as their home, and there they had their two daughters Daphne and Heather.
Ritchie is survived by his wife of 49 years and 5 months, Salome Rabon Apellanes, his daughter Daphne Apellanes-Ackerson, son-in-law Keith Olvena Ackerson, daughter Heather Apellanes Gonio, son-in-law Benigno Valenciano Gonio III, and his two grandchildren Vivian Ackerson and Ava Jane Gonio. He is also survived by his brothers, Desi and Ernesto Apellanes, their wives, Raineria Apellanes and Daria Apellanes, and dozens of nieces and nephews.
Ritchie - and Salome - never ceased to maintain close ties to their homeland, Bohol, Philippines, bringing their children back home several times during Ritchie’s life. He became the first vice president of the Boholano Association of Washington State, a strong community of Boholanos and Filipinos who still to this day give back to the island and maintain strong connections and events.
Ritchie retired from the Seattle City Light after 26 years of hard work and service as an Electrical Engineering Specialist.
Born as “Eufracio” Apellanes, known in the States as “Ritchie”, and endearingly remembered by so many as “Boy”, he will be missed by all whom he leaves behind. But we know he is with us in spirit now, and always.
