Robert Bob Bernard Halverson, loved and devoted son of Oscar Halverson and Myrtle Hawes Halverson, who predeceased him, went to other pastures Thursday March 22, 2001 at 11:10am in Seattle. He was born on 10 August 1926, in Bremerton, Washington.
He joined the Navy in 1944, had Electrician's Mate training, and subsequently was sent to Hong Kong, Canton, Shanghai, and Taiwan. After WWII Bob became a member of the Navy Reserve for more than 35 years. He saw active service again during the Korean War aboard the USS Bairoko, CVE115, attending reunions of his shipmates during the past two years. He loved his time in the navy! During his non-service life he graduated from Bremerton High School in 1944, and the University of Washington with a degree in History in 1949, called to active duty due to the Korean war, and then returned to the UW and became a CPA, eventually moving to San Francisco and then retiring from Fireman's Fund Insurance Co., and from the Navy Reserve with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. Bob enjoyed whole-heartedly being part of the family and fellowship of both the Masons and Elks. In return, he gave over 52 years of continuous service to Masons Lodge No. 117 and Elks Bremerton Lodge No. 1181.
Bob was a gentle, caring and loving man who never ever had a bad word to say to or about anyone. Everyone that met him liked him instantly. He was marvelous at telling stories of his early life experiences, and sharing comic anecdotes. He was totally committed to his parents.
In retirement Bob moved to Washington with George in 1990 and became a B & B co-owner/host for almost two years with guests returning for the loving and peaceful environment he provided. He continued his stamp collecting and over time became an expert in genealogy with special help from his cousin Jana. He loved attending the opera, symphony, and ballet, becoming expert in music history. He was also a homebody who loved gardening, shopping, and cooking, baking the best apple pie in town, and spent much time in the Magnolia Village making new friends and regularly meeting for coffee with them.
He leaves here on this earth many friends, his partner of 14 years George S. Hernandez, his close long time buddies, Jim Simonetti, Don Wirtz, Dick Horgan, and Ken Sharpe, plus Jess Salinas who predeceased Bob by one day, Tony and John of Brisbane, CA, his cousins Dick, Bill, Jack Hawes, and Leonard Malarsie. and their wives and children, other cousins and newly discovered distant relatives, George's family and his every moment little joy, his dog Ruff.
In lieu of flowers or anything else, Bob prefers donations to the following organizations: Lifelong AIDS Alliance 206-329-6923; Bremerton Lodge #1181 360-479-1181; Washington Tall Elks 1-800-825-3557; Shriner's Hospital
