Robert Ernest Hunter, 82, passed away September 25, 2003, at Alterra Clare Bridge in Lynnwood, Washington with the loving support of the Snohomish County Hospice.
He was born December 7, 1920, in Seattle, Washington, the son of Ira and Leenta Hunter.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Jessie Leask Hunter; sons, Rod Hunter of Winthrop, Washington, and Rick Libby of Corvallis, Oregon; daughter, Judy Jerry Andrist of Snohomish, Washington; six grandchildren, Justin Hunter, Jeremy Bree Andrist, Sean Hunter, Jamey Jeff Boschee, Brandon Hunter, and Audrey Nick Fletcher; and one great-grandchild, Zachary Fletcher. In 1997, his youngest son, Jim Hunter, preceded him in death.
Robert grew up primarily in the Greenlake area and attended Roosevelt High School prior to enlisting in the United States Navy. He served on board the destroyer, USS MacDonough, deployed in the South Pacific during World War II.
Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the Seattle area where he worked for the City of Seattle, Street Department. After his marriage to Jessie, they moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, to be near Jessie?s family. He remained there with his family for approximately ten years, working at the Ketchikan Pulp Mill until he began his own business, Tongass Transfer.
In August of 1959, the family moved back to the Seattle area. Robert was employed for approximately 25 years as a Teamster in the construction business prior to retiring in 1982.
Robert enjoyed his retirement years with Jessie and friends traveling in their travel trailer, seeing many parts of our beautiful country. He, also, enjoyed spending time with grandchildren.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as a commander in the Ketchikan Post, was a past commander and active member n the Blackburn-Aurora Post #3348 in Seattle, and served one term as 2nd District Commander of Washington State VFW. He was passionate about his involvement with the VFW and enjoyed the comradery of his fellow members.
He was a member of St. David?s Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Shoreline, Washington, where he and Jessie lived for the last 25 years.
He was recently diagnosed with Dementia and died as a result of this disease. Our thanks to the staffs of Alterra and Snohomish County Hospice for the quality care they gave him during his stay there. We, the family, are grateful for the peace of mind knowing that he was in good hands.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at 2:00 PM and will be conducted at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Chapel, 11111 Aurora Avenue North, Seattle, with committal services to follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
