For My Uncle Bob,

The three most influential men in my life as I was growing up were my Dad, Grandpa and his son, 
my Uncle Bob.  Each of them was honest, kind, gentle, compassionate, courageous, hardworking and responsible men who lived well and taught by their example.

There isn't a time in my life when there wasn't my Uncle Bob.  He would visit many times a year
and was present at important events in our lives plus many holidays.  When I was younger, we would visit him once in awhile, but it was easier for him to travel to stay with us since we lived on a farm.  Later when we were on our own, he traveled with my parents, and then after my father passed away, he and Mom would visit the places they loved most, like Ashland, OR, to attend the Shakespearean Festivals, Crater Lake, to the coast, to California to visit their sister, or would meet her half way in Reno or Lake Tahoe.  I feel like Mom has not only lost her brother, but also her best friend.  I am grateful they had each other.

My earliest memories of Uncle Bob included him reading stories to me and I remember how I loved his voice, HIs perfect enunciation and I just knew he was the best story teller in the world, even better than any actor could possibly be.  I even wondered why he wasn't an actor.  But I now know he had a much more important mission in life besides story telling.

Uncle Bob was an accomplished designer and carpenter.  He was always remodeling or working on a project.  One year, when I was little, he built a cabinet for me, just my size with a work area and cupboards and shelves above and below with sliding door that I opened with my finger in a hole made just for me.  I also had small pots and pans, dishes and utensils that had their special place in the cabinet.  I knew I was the luckiest girl ever.  When I was young, his home was like a mansion.  There were strict rules of course.  If anyone took a shower, the limit was 5 minutes, and if you were still in the shower, Uncle Bob turned on the hot water downstairs, so of course, the water upstairs was cold rather quickly.  After using the shower, we were to sqeegee down the walls.  I thought this was fantastic.  I loved visiting Uncle Bob.  He was passionate about the environment even when I was young, and that was 40 years or more that I remember him recycling.  He would fold the cardboard boxes, stack the newspapers, put cans in one box, and glass in another.  It was decades later that it became fashionable to recycle, but Uncle Bob had been doing it all along.

When I was in college, I spent 3 months in Tacoma for my psychology training at Ft. Steilacoom.  He 
told me I was welcome to spend the weekends there any time.  Several weekends a month I would visit and we would always do something new and unusual. He was the greatest host, gracious and loving.  Trying out new and fun restaurants, or going to the locks to watch the boats come and go or just driving around looking at other neighborhoods were among our favorite activities. A special treat would be to attend a ballet, the opera or a play.

Uncle Bob enjoyed traveling and photography, so he was able to share the wonders and beauty of 
his journeys through his pictures or slides.  Flowers, roses, sunsets, oceans, majestic mountains, clouds, interesting buildings, faraway lands, historic sites, and family and friends... I loved seeing them all.  So many of his
photographs would take my breath away they were so beautiful. 

Uncle Bob lived simply.  He always said if he hadn't used an item in 6 months, it was given away to someone who could use it.  He showed me
that life was a gift and he lived it every day with creativity and purpose.  People came first.  He would help others in whatever way they needed, whether the need was financiallyi, or words of advice or by example, or just to sit and listen.  Each day was a gift and he lived it to the fullest every day.  Not many have done that.

Uncle Bob was so loved and appreciated.  He has made such a difference in the world.  My children 
and I have been blessed with his sense of humor, love of all the beauty that was around him, plants, music, architecture, and devotion to 
family.  He taught us to use our creativity, to have courage, self-respect, responsibility, dreams and plans on how to achieve them, and to not be afraid to try.

I will always think of Bob as I care for my plants or when I see a gorgeous photo.  I will 
also think of him every time I play my stereo, remembering the story of how he used 2 boards angled toward him a distance apart to create a stereo effect with hifi sound.  In my mind, he invented stereo.

Now that Bob is in a better place, free, comfortable and at peace, I hope he visits and helps me still.  He has taught me so much in my life and I am forever grateful for my very special Uncle Bob.  I miss you, Uncle Bob.

I had the pleasure of knowing Bob both as a wonderful family friend and professionally as our architectural careers overlapped briefly at NBBJ; mine just starting and his drawing to a close.  Always the perfect, nattily dressed gentleman, he was a great mentor for how to conduct oneself, no matter what the setting.

Uncle Bob was my mom Betty's only brother.  They shared a love of architecture, travel, music and all things botanical.

After my father's passing, Uncle Bob and she traveled together as often as "their" health would allow - motor trips to New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and Oregon, and a special jaunt to paradise in Hawaii.  He encouraged driving off the beaten path whenever possible, exploring backroads, seeking out the obscure: searching for "diamonds in the rough."

I'll be forever grateful for his compassion and unselfishness when he interrupted his own life and flew to So California a number of times and helped to care for my mother during her final months.  They'd search through photos and childhood memories, laughing and crying as they recalled "tales of old."  His gentle, caring ways were a great comfort to her.

Our times together were few, but he reinforced my interest in gardening - sharing his wealth of horticultural knowledge.  Through him I learned early to see my surroundings with different eyes.  

I will miss that quiet loving guidance...

When I joined NBBJ in 1962 Bob was already one of the important people in the Firm, and he became a wonderful mentor to me in my struggling days as an "apprentice."  He was, fortunately for me, very tolerant.  Bob was very well liked by all members of the NBBJ family and by the many important clients who entrusted their projects to him.  Seattle, and other cities, reflect his talents in many of their most important buildings.

Dear Uncle Bob,

I have always known Uncle Bob to be a sweet, kind, caring, funny and gentle man, and a joy to be around.  Even though my memories of him are few, they are wonderful.  He was a business man and taught me several things about how to be a successful person.  I will still celebrate his birthday on August 29th.  

Uncle Bob, I have always loved you and thought so highly of you.  You have always been a joy to be around and your hospitality is unmatched.  I am saddened by the thought that I will never be able to see you and speak to you in this physical realm we are currently embracing, but I trust and believe we all will find our way back together in the afterlife of Heaven.  You are a blessing to us, Bob, and we will cherish all the wonderful memories you have given to all of us.  

Uncle Bob, I want you to know that I welcome your visits in spirit whenever you are so inclined to visit.  I welcome all blessings and experiences that come from this and know and trust that you are where you are needed.  

You have been such a gentle Man of the Lord and I have complete faith that God will take care of you as well as Grandpa and Aunt Debbie.

For Bob,

I grew up in the early 1930's, and Bob was 11 years older than I.  Our sister had already moved to California to find her "career".

When I decided I wanted a doll house, times were hard.  Bob found a discarded piece of plywood.  He drew a floor plan on one side, then made some doll figures out of soft cardboard, found some remnants of cloth from Mama's sewing basket to make furniture covers and curtains for windows, as well as clothes for the "paper dolls".  He even made latch hook miniature rugs.  We spent many hours in that "doll house". 

After a couple years, Bob and our collie dog "Lady" decided it was time I learned to ski.  So we went a couple of blocks to Manito Park hills (Duncan Sunken Gardens).  

Our father was the manager of office space in the Sherwood Building on Riverside Avenue in Spokane.  He was responsible for hired help.  Sometimes he was left with no elevator operator, so Mother, Bob and I each learned that job also.  That was the beginning of his excellent "work ethics" at an early age.

Bob was the best brother a girl could have... I love you, dear!

My acquaintance with Bob has been all too brief, but I speak for my fellow members and the director of the Blaine Church Choir, on Beacon Hill in Seattle.  Through Bob's friendship with Miyo Shintaku at Exeter House, our choir drew inspiration from Bob.  He expressed his encouragement (and appreciation) whenever we sang at Exeter House and whenever he came to our church services, as he did on Good Friday 2009.  He moved us with the tears he shed when this meant that he found profound joy in music.  His dear friend Miyo led us to think that Bob had been a director of a choir, and he may well have been, in his way.  The losses we suffer among our elders are sad indeed:  Miyo passed away suddenly, in Exeter House, on 29 July; Bob just missed the service for her (where we, her choir sang) because he was in the hospital.  Then we learned of Bob's passing.  Our prayers these days include Bob.  Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

My Great Uncle Bob was the perfect proper gentleman. He was very kind but stern. He always had awesome stories of him growing up, or things he has seen or done. I didnt get the pleasure to get to know him as well as my brothers, I was the youngest of 5 kids.  When he would visit, we would always sit around the living room to listen to his adventures. He enjoyed the little things in life, weather it was smelling a flower or listening to birds sing.  He always had a smile on his face. I miss my uncle Bob and I wish I had a little more time with him. One thing I will always remember about him is that no matter what happened in his life, nothing slowed him down, he was bound and determined to enjoy it. With his famous quote that will always be with me - "Ok, here we go!" 
I love you Uncle Bob, Please give Grandpa and Aunt Debbie a kiss for me, I miss you all so much. See ya later! :)

Bob lived at Exeter House, and I was employed at Exeter House.  He was a terrific individual, a friend to numerous residents and staff and so much more. On a deeper level he was gracious, kind and inspiring.  He was involved and a natural contributor who enhanced the lives of his fellow residents through words and deeds!  He was a staff favorite, I will miss him.

Mr. Pope was my fathers friend for as long as my memory serves me.  They were friends long before I was born.  As I grew up, Mr. Pope was always a part of our family and graced our house at many holiday and birthdays.  One of my earliest memories was Pope, my father and other members of "the gang" walking laps in our pasture to help my dad recover from heart surgery.  He continued to be a part of our family after my father died.  He was one of the last connections I had to my fathers history.  We will miss him.

My husband, Bel Whitehead, and Bob were close friends for over 50 years.  They met in Seattle when both lived in a boarding house in the University District in the early 1940's.  After Bel and I married in 1964, each Christmas would bring a lovely card from this man named Bob Pope.  When Boeing moved our family back to the Seattle area in 1974, Bob was one of the first people
to call and welcome us.  I met Bob for the first time over dinner  and he became an important part of our family in the years to follow.  He was the one who identified for me all the plants and trees which grew on the turn -of -the century farm we had purchased.   He would patiently walk around the property with me, time after time, until I finally knew the names of everything growing on our property.  He graced our home during many holidays and gatherings and his warmth and humor added so much to these occasions.     What a blessing to have known this delightful and gentle man; we will all miss him.

I have appreciated knowing Bob since my childhood growing up in Northern Virginia outside Washington D.C.  He would visit the A.T. Miller family when he was on many a work assignment there. I was collecting coins and I would check the coins he brought from the West Coast for San Francisco mint marks.  We also had fun staying with him in his house in Seattle during the 1962 World's Fair.  After I graduated from college, I received a job offer in Seattle and he was gracious enough to let me stay in his home in Madrona overlooking Lake Washington and the Cascades until I was able to buy a starter house of my own.  I was very impressed with how well he dressed and he schooled me on the men's clothing shop locations in Seattle.  He was also very helpful in providing me advice on landscaping, gardening, and stereo sound systems.
Bob had a great laugh and smile along with a vibrant voice.  
Bob, I wish you well on your next great adventure!

I am the oldest son of William Walter, one of Mr Pope's house mates so many years ago in the University of Washington neighborhood.  My dad speaks highly of Mr Pope, and he hopes to make it to the services.  My condolences to the family.

Uncle Bob was a great human being.  He was very generous to let me live at his house in Seattle while I was in law school.  I have many great memories of his visits when we lived in Washington, DC and Hawaii.  As the project architect on the Sea-First Building, "the box the Space Needle came in," he left his architectural legacy in the city.

Mr. Pope (as he was addressed by most) hired me in the early 80's to work with Doug Bevis, CFO, at NBBJ.  Through the years, we worked together on many projects including the move of the office from 904 7th to Pioneer Square.  I remember celebrating with a hug at the end of the ordeal at the bottom of the fabulous staircase that graced NBBJ's lobby.  Mr. Pope was the consumate gentleman and the wearer of many stylish hats.  I will continue to thank him for allowing me to be an integral part of NBBJ team during the "as good as it gets" years.
