Mr. Yasui always brought a smile to my face.  I was a 6th grade student of his at Kennydale Elementary in 1977/78, the same class that Ramona Salavea was in (she posted earlier here).  Honestly, I don’t know that I could improve upon the reflections Ramona shared as they are very much as I remember too.  His energetic, caring and friendly demeanor came along at an important time for me in my schooling as I was struggling with belonging.  Mr. Yasui went above and beyond that of being a teacher, but also being a friend.  I felt that he genuinely cared (he did!) and that made all the difference in the world for me.  As my mom was a 4th grade teacher at Kennydale for a time while Mr. Yasui was there, she would share with me how Mr. Yasui was doing and of conversations they had, and I was always so happy to hear about him.  Forty-two years later, this morning Mr. Yasui crossed my mind and I decided to look him up only to find that he had passed.  I am so saddened by the news, yet lifted from reading all the wonderful memories shared here and learning of all the other lives he positively touched.  Rest well Mr. Yasui.

Mr. Yasui had this ability to leave an impact on anyone he met. I distinctly remember his enthusiasm, his energy and passion to teach. I was a student of his at Maplewood Heights. He had a great sense of humor and often joked around with us yet always pushed us to try harder and do better in class. He made every one of his students feel special. I remember all of the creative projects he had us do and loved them and tried so hard to do well that my parents have still kept them to this day. Rest In Peace Mr. Yasui. Condolences to your family, thank you for making a positive impact on all of your students.

Mr. Yasui was a teacher who made a difference in the lives of so many.  He genuinely cared about people.  He was inspiring.  He was an artist.  His work ethic was incredible—always being the first car at school and the last one to leave.  His sense of humor was quick and witty.  He was a great human being.

When I think back, I do not remember the exact academic lessons he taught; but I do remember Mr. Yasui’s energy, passion, enthusiasm and how he delivered—he made learning fun.  I remember always wanting to do my best to make him proud.  
Even after elementary school, he still remembered me.  I always looked forward to seeing him start races for our high school track meets.  I admired his passion for running.  He was fit.  When I finished college and became a teacher, I stopped by to visit him.  He still remembered me.

Now, 21 years of teaching under my own belt, it is easy to say Mr. Yasui is one of the greatest teachers I have had the pleasure of knowing.  I will always keep his legacy alive by sharing about him with my own students.  

I know Mr. Yasui is up above, making new friends… and doing what he did best, teaching.  


Hearing the news of Mr. Yasui’s death just broke my heart. Mr. Yasui was my 6th grade teacher at Kennydale Elementary in Renton. I was so very fortunate to be a student of his first class in 1977-78.  He made such an impact on me and my classmates...he was so relatable and genuinely cared. He would sing and play his guitar and have us listen and sing to popular music in the classroom: John Denver, Barry Manilow, and Fleetwood Mac. He would even lead singing at school assemblies. He had such a sense of humor too (somewhat sarcastic but joking), always teasing us. I really missed having him as a teacher and would keep in touch by Christmas cards into my college years. I found one of those cards and was reminded of his sense of humor as I read his note, “I wanted to sing at our school Christmas program but they wouldn’t let me. Maybe I shouldn’t have asked for the $100.”! Mr. Yasui was one of a kind. A little over a year ago, I saw Mr. Yasui running on a street in Renton as I was driving by. I rolled down my window and said, “Hi Mr, Yasui, do you remember me?” He said, “yes!” so I pulled over and we talked for a little while. We talked about classmates and if I remember this and that - his memory was so sharp! My gosh, this was almost 40 years ago and he must’ve had so many more students after us. I am so glad I had the opportunity to talk to him in person. I’m attaching a pic of our 6th grade class - I’m the one standing next to Mr. Yasui. This past week while working, I contacted my Help Desk and was asked my security question, “What is the name of your favorite teacher?”. I said, “Mr. Yasui”. It brought a tear to my eye thinking of his recent passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Yasui’s family during this difficult time.  He will be remembered always!

This breaks my heart but he was an amazing teacher that I had growing up. He will be deeply missed. He always encouraged us to do our best no matter what, talked to us when we needed advice or help. My condolences to his family. 

I never had the pleasure of having Mr. Yasui as a teacher but so many of my friends spoke so highly of him that I started hanging out in his classroom. We always enjoyed his jokes and stories

Ron worked high school athletic events at Renton Memorial Stadium.  He served as the primary Starter for track and field meets and was the best Starter that I ever witnessed.  However, what made Ron truly special was his energy, great sense of humor, and positive demeanor.  He made the student-athletes, and all that he came in contact with feel special.  Ron had a positive impact on SO many and will be greatly missed.  However the positive impact that he had will live on in our memories.

Ron will be missed so much. His greatest joy was teaching and he was the best. 

I taught with Ron at Maplewood and we became close friends. His kindness and sharing outshined everyone. Going out of his way to help others was so natural for him. I can’t count the number of times he problem-solved with me. The word ‘awesome’ does not do him justice—he was better than awesome. 

I will miss him and I send my sympathies to his family he always spoke so lovingly about. I miss my friend so much. We all loved him.


When I started The fall of 2016, I meet Ron at Renton Memorial Stadium. Hazen High School played at Renton High School. I was nervous he told me to loosen up shook my hand and became my friend. Ron would do anything to help in any capacity  Renton Memorial Stadium Renton school district his family
And this community has lost A  great man Much love family. 

It is with a heavy heart that I'm writing this.  I worked with Ron many years at Maplewood Heights.  We had a lot of fun, laughs and jabs at each other.  We worked on the Yearbook together until they decided to go with a company to do it.  I think we were both glad when that time had come.  He also trained students to be on patrol, and he took that very seriously.....only the best for the kids.  I see former students and they seem to always ask about him.  He definitely left an impression on all the people that he came in contact with.  I want to send my condolences to the family.  They say live each day as if it were your last, and there seems to be a lot of truth in that.  RIP Ron.  I will miss you and love you.

Mr. Yasui will forever be one of my favorite teachers ever. I went through my years at Maplewood hearing about him from other students, hoping to have him in fifth grade. He was all jokes year round but was still skillfully able to scare us kids into doing our work. I will never forget when he waited outside with me for my ride 30 minutes after school ended, keeping me company. He also let us take home his books at the end of the year and I still have the whole Chronicles of Narnia series from his room. One of the funniest memories I have of him was when he poked his head into Ms. Gallagher’s room full of girls before our family life and sexual heath lesson and  said: “Alright, I’ll be teaching!” (we, as 10-11 year olds, all immediately started screaming). Even after leaving Maplewood Heights, he remembered me and would tease me and my friends every chance he got and asked if we had boyfriends yet. I am so incredibly fortunate to have seen him this year before graduating and catching up, seeing him smile and laugh at our football game. My condolences to Mr. Yasui’s family; I will forever look up to him and remember his warm character. 

     I had the privilege of teaching with Ron at Maplewood Heights throughout the 90’s.  He was such a generous and kind soul who always went above and beyond to help out colleagues, parents and especially students.  Many times Ron would come and visit my kindergarten classroom in his safety patrol vest to help guide the morning kindergartners out to the bus.  Ohhh, how the kids loved marching behind him with his crossing flag and and huge smile!  He always approached my class with kindness, grace and sense of humor.   Often Ron would step in as an interpreter for many of our Spanish speaking families.  There was never a time that you couldn’t count on Ron to help out.  He was the true definition of a dedicated and inspirational teacher!

Ron was my upstairs neighbor for 23 years and such an amazing man... 💗 Whenever it snowed he was always the first person out in the parking lot shoveling snow for hours and socializing with our condo community!! I miss you so much Ron!! You were, are, and always will be such an amazing soul. 💗

Ron was amazing. I have had the privilege of working with him for decades at the Renton Memorial Stadium. 
He was regarded as one of the best and fairest starters for races at track meets in the area. He not only started every race for the all the Renton high and middle school track meets but often was asked to help at league and district meets. 
At football games he was one of those people that stepped up to do whatever was needed to assure that everyone was safe and had a good time at the stadium. 
He always had a smile on his face and was always in a good mood. He made you happy to be there with him and you knew everything was good when he was around. 
His shoes will be hard to fill and it won’t be the same to be at the stadium without him.


Mr Yasui  was my math teacher at Maplewood Heights. He was an amazing teacher and so much fun!!  I always remember the great stickers he would give out for good grades.   Love and prayers to his family. 

I had the pleasure of working with Ron for  many years at Maplewood Heights Elementary.  He was such a kind-hearted soul who loved his students and made everyone feel welcome.  I will truly miss him, he was one of the best! 💗

Mr. Yasui was a spectacular teacher. He went out of his way to make me a better student. Later, in high school, seeing his smiling face at the track meets was always special. He was such a special man and we will all miss him so much

Mr Yasui was my favorite  teacher at Highlands Elementary School. His patience and creatively through teaching was outstanding. His ability to connect with all students was magical as was his  way to inspire us to become better students and better humans. The world was better with him in it.

Mr. Yasui was one of my favorite teachers out of all that I have known. He was welcoming and very funny; Always tried his best to get me used to a new environment since I was a new student. I remember all the jokes and laughs I've had with him, and he was always so generous and kind to his students. I am so sad that I did not get to visit him more after I was out of elementary, but the one time I visited him he greeted me in the same way that he would when I was still in his class. You will forever be missed, thank you for all you have done.

I was one of Mr. Yasui’s students at Maplewood Heights over 35 years ago.  To this day, I attribute his passion and excitement for teaching me math as one of the major factors for my ways of thinking.  It sparked something in me that I have never forgotten. And in turn I have taught my children the same way.  You cannot understate his contribution to this world. He is a generational blessing that I thank God for.  Blessings to him and his family!

My Yasui was my 6th grade teacher and he made learning fun! He challenged us to give our best and he pushed us, but we knew he was only doing it to get the best out of us each and every day.

Having Mr.Yasui as a teacher was such a blessing. As a student who needed to feel creative in every subject, heard, included and believed in; he was the perfect teacher! His vibrant, comical, reassuring style of teaching was an unforgettable one. He saw strength and unique abilities in each of his students and he nurtured each student in their needs, when you entered his classroom you wanted to learn. What an amazing superpower that was that he had.  He is one of my top 3 teachers, someone who's lessons I hold on to an now share with my own kids. May peace ovewhelm his family in this time.  

Mr. Yasui was such an amazing teacher to my son! He knew he saw something special in my son, he called a conference with me privately. He told me in all his years teaching, he had never come across a student like my son. His intelligence was that of a College aged student & yet he was only in the 5th grade. He had never experienced a student of that academic magnitude that he honestly thought my son was cheating on his tests bc my son would literally never turn in his homework. He said that during class time and coby would raise his hand to answer a question and his response was again at college level & the other students would that the other students would tease him or think he was wrong and weird for the answers he would give. But his answer was correct however it just was not worded like how a normal 5th grader would or should answer.  So he had shown me some of his class projects, but there was one were he wanted his students to make a terrarium out of a 2ltr bottle, that's it just put some dirt in it and a few plants. He said can you guess which one Coby's was? I couldnt guess...he said see that really tall one over there. Well that's coby's. His is a self watering terrarium!! All I asked was to put the dirt in it. That's all! That's YOUR SON!! He was beyond impressed with coby! So much that they had a special connection. And pressed to get him into the Discovery program. Which is for gifted kids. I will forever remember that conference. Thank you Mr.Yasui for all of your years and dedication to the youth of your years past as well as all the future families you will be effecting because of your dedication & heart to those students. You will forever be remembered and missed.

I am beyond thankful I had Mr. Yasui as my Fifth Grade teacher, he always brought life into the classroom which always made my day.  I remembered walking in to his class and hearing him say  “Oh boy here comes chuckles the clown! Matthew, are you going to pay attention in class today?” He helped anyone that was in need and welcomed everyone. He found ways to put a smile on everyones face no matter who they were, because teaching was important to him.  

A year ago Mr. Yasui  spotted me working at my job and surprised me with a smile “Matthew is that you chuckles the clown and the kid that didn’t pay attention!”. That day I shared with him how thankful I was that he was my teacher. Because, years has passed since I was in fifth grade, and he still remembered me. I will always have that memory of him he always made my day. 

My condolence to the Yasui family. Mr. Yasui spoke life into people and brought life into a room. He had the power to make anyone feel welcomed and seen. He will not be forgotten. 

I had the pleasure of being a student in Mr. Yasui's 5th grade class from 2004-2005. I remember him as being an incredibly kind, yet stern man. He definitely earned a lot of respect from his students and generally brought out the best in them through his firm teaching style.

One of the lasting memories I have of Mr. Yasui was from a rainy day 15 years ago. Our 5th grade class was lining up outside to go into the school near the cafeteria entrance and it was pouring rain outside. Several of us happened to look back towards the portables where Mr. Yasui was walking off the portable ramp without his umbrella. Then, like a D1 sprinter, we saw Mr. Yasui “bookin it” across the basketball courts into the school. We all knew Mr. Yasui was a runner, but watching it in action was something mythical. I’m pretty sure, even at 55 years old, he would have given us all a run for our money.

To Mr. Yasui’s family, I extend my condolences and want to assure you that he will not be forgotten by the students, parents and faculty that he impacted throughout his time at Maplewood. 

Ron was a vital part of the staff at Renton Memorial Stadium, as the starter for track meets and working at football games. He will be truly missed. 

Mr. Yasui was such an amazing teacher and caring soul. He knew how to reach all of us and motivate us to be our very best. He was a teacher you knew  cared and always went above and beyond to help you know your worth.  I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing and I send my deepest condolences to his family. He will forever be remembered by the countless students who’s lives he touched. 

I am so deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Yasui, and I want to extend my condolences and love to his family. I was blessed to have him as my 5th grade teacher at Maplewood. I had struggled in 4th grade, especially in math, and it had left me with little confidence and motivation. Mr. Yasui had a great gift in being able to really connect with each of his students individually. We all knew he really cared and taught with his whole heart. He helped me turn my grades around, and planted the seed for my life long love of learning. I truly would not have accomplished my college and graduate education without him. My favorite memory of his class was chatting with him during recess and after classes. We both loved beanie babies and I took a special liking to a cocker spaniel beanie baby that lived on his desk. At the end of the school year he gave me that beanie baby as a present, and I have cherished it ever since. I still have it more than 20 years later, and it still makes me feel loved and special whenever I see it. He was truly a special human being and a gift to all who knew him.

Such an amazing caring man looked so forward to seeing him when my son attended Maplewood Hieghts and when I saw him on my walks running by! Such a sad loss..

I am so deeply saddened by this news. Mr. Yasui was a cornerstone of my childhood memories attending Maplewood Heights Elementary. I can still hear him yelling at us to “get to class!” and laughing at me when I asked to be on AM safety patrol because he knew my father wouldn’t get me there on time to participate.  Even after leaving Maplewood I’d see him from time to time during dismissal hours as I drove down Jericho and he’d always smile and wave as myself and my family went by.  My siblings loved him equally as much during their time as Panthers, and my father always had a particular soft spot for him and would always relish in the opportunity to have a few moments of conversation with him whenever possible. My deepest condolences to the Yasui family.  I’m forever grateful to have such fond memories of a truly phenomenal educator and human being.

Mr. Yausi was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. He would let all of us who were struggling with math, stay in during recess and get help from him, even though it was his lunch break. I would see him during track meets in middle school and he would always joke and push me around like I was one of his own. His presence will be missed and I send all of my well wishes to his family. 

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Yasui's passing. Mr. Yasui had “presence.” Both in personality and action. He was, it must be said, a yeller. When he was fired up, you could hear him on the other side of the building! But at the same time, he was so very kind and gentle. So encouraging, especially in art. The room was wall-to-wall (and ceiling) art and posters. You could always count on a calm start to the morning, with his cassette tapes of Yanni playing. He gave everything to his students and was a truly dedicated teacher. Ron Yasui was appreciated and will be missed.

I had Mr. Yasui as my 6th grade teacher many years ago. He cared for all of his students. Every once in awhile I would visit Maplewood Heights to visit him and Mr. G.  We stayed in contact for awhile. I invited him to my graduation and later on my wedding, both of which he attended. The last time I saw him he actually got to meet my daughter. Mr. Yasui had such an impact on my life. I will dearly miss him.

It was such an honor to know Mr. Yasui!  He touched countless students’ lives, including my sister’s and mine.  Even after moving on from Maplewood it was a joy to see him when I would go back to visit. Prayers & condolences to his family. He will be missed!

First off, I would like to send my condolences and prayers to the Yasui family. My favorite memory of Mr. Yasui was all of 5th grade. He was and still is the best teacher I’ve ever had until this day. He forever left a positive and influential mark on me. He was funny and always made the whole class laugh. He had the best jokes. I will never forget all the snacks he shared with us. He went above and beyond for all his students. I’ve always wondered if he still would remember me if I visited. 12 years later I wish I would have. Nevertheless, you will remain our hearts and prayers. You will forever be my favorite teacher. We love you Mr. Yasui! 

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Yasui.  He was my 6th grade teacher at Maplewood Heights and I fell in love with learning in his classroom. I pursued education because of his influence and currently teach first grade.  Mr. Yasui had high expectations of us and we were determined to meet them. His classroom was a safe place and I loved my time with him.  My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. 

Mr. Yasui will be remembered as my most influential teacher to this date. The relationship that he built with his tough love made many of us who we are today, he knew when we were messing up but continued to work with us, no matter the difference. 

I remember after school when he took my sister and I to the teachers lounge, to show us that Mr. G’s birthday fell on Friday the 13th that year, good times.

You were one the teachers that I always looked back on, and even visited after Maplewood heights days. You were strict but fun and everyone always wanted to learn and be part of your class. I remember being proud to share that I too was a runner at a young age since you were inspiring to me.  Though I was still too young to know it. You will forever be in my thoughts as the I go through life and think back to the ones who helped mold me to who I am today. Rest in peace, you will be missed, but never forgotten.

Even though Mr. Yasui was my 6th grade teacher so many years ago, I still remember and cherish the time I spent in his class. It’s amazing how much I can still recall from that year. A sign of an amazing teacher! He was truly a blessing to all of the many lives he touched. My condolences to his loved ones.

Was  both of my girls favorite teacher and a friend to our family. We loved hanging out with him. He was a great teacher and wouldn’t except anything from my girls but their best. Mr. Yasui was the best! Even though I didn't get him as a 6th grade teacher he still got to know me and was always so funny and kind. You were an amazing teacher and your students will miss you!!

Mr Yasui, was a Rock-Star  teacher at Maplewood Heights! He was so friendly and fair with all the students he came into contact with. I appreciated his no nonsense approach and his humor with the kids and parents. He was the teacher that helped with the crossing guards.  He also volunteered to be the teacher who stayed after school for running /joggingclub after school. Although neither of my children were in his class we still appreciated his kindness as we saw him volunteer his time at the high school track meets. We were so lucky to know him. You were the most amazing teacher.  Even through your tough expression, your caring core was obvious by the way you kept kids accountable and made learning so fun for us.  I still have the Hard Rock Cafe souvenirs you gave me from San Francisco (c. 1989) somewhere!  :)  Thank you, too, for attending my college graduation.  The gift of time made is second to none.  You've made your mark in my life and others', no doubt.  Stay sassy, and you will be missed!

When anybody asks about memories of a favorite teacher, without hesitation it was Mr
Yasui! I can remember being in fifth grade and wanting nothing more than to be in his class. He demanded the best out of his students and he got it. His room was always decorated the best.  I can remember hundreds of posters from sports to Art‘s and just about anything you could imagine filling his room and occupying your mind with inspiration! I was in his class I believe in 1991 and for approximately 20 years I would stop in randomly and with out hesitation he could remember the year you were there and the people that were in that class. He was a bright light and he truly cared about his students. He is truly the best and I tell stories today to my kids about my sixth grade teacher Mr. Yasui. 
RIP Mr Yasui you are truly missed. 

Mr. Yasui taught 6th grade at Maplewood Heights back in my time there. He was fun, but strict. He wasn't my teacher, but he did run the computer lab when it was still a newish thing and I remember him patiently walking me through learning how to use one. He eventually became my oldest son, Aiden's teacher in 5th grade years later. He was again, kind but strict. He made sure my son was ready for middle school when the time came. 

The news of his passing saddens my heart greatly. There are many good teachers in the world, but few become Great Teachers, and Mr. Yasui was one of them. He was the teacher that we look back on and say "Yes, that man was a positive influence on my life and I am better for it."  May he rest in paradise.

My heart is heavy with this news. Mr. Yasui was my favorite teacher of all time. He had such a positive impact on my life from the day I meet him. Not only did he shape me into the student I dreamed to be but he became a dear friend. I will forever remember our Chuck donuts in the morning and patrol parties. Many laughs and memories I will treasure. I am so blessed that we stayed in contact and he was there to see me on my wedding day. MR Yasui you will forever be remembered and missed. I had Mr. Yasui for 6th grade at HoneyDew  Elementary. Hands down the most amazing, creative, funny and engaging teacher/human ever. Back in the good old days, on occasion, he would actually give me and my friend Katy a ride home after school. He was the energy and grit that would resonate  with anyone that came to know him. Fast forward 22  years; I always loved seeing him at MWH helping out with traffic detail before school.   As I walked my own children to the building on HOT mornings  he would shout to me, “ someone needs to turn the heat up!”  He never forgot a name or a face. Rest In Peace, kind sir! ❤️


Mr. Yasui will be dearly missed. He was my fifth grade teacher at Maplewood Heights and always remembered me afterwords. He would be the gun shooter at The Middle school and High School track meets and he would always crack jokes with me right before all my races. Even in retirement he loved to support the community. 

I was once a student of Mr. Yasui, am saddened by his passing. Mr. Yasui was a very compassionate and amazing teacher that brought every subject into a form of art and fun my 6th grade year, spent many years dropping by Maplewood just to say hi to him and MS. Flye, I hope the angels have as much fun learning from you as we did growing up! Sending hugs and prayers to his family and friends!! You will truly be missed, there will never be another teacher like you. 

Mr. Yasui was my favorite teacher I ever had.  He was my 6th grade teacher at Maplewood Heights and went on to tutor me in math as I went into middle school.  I loved running into him in the halls at Maplewood as my own son started kindergarten.  So sad to see that he has begun his journey on the other side.  But I hope his family finds peace in the number of families he touched during his many, many years at maplewood.

Mr Yasui was such a great teacher. I had him for math in 6th grade at Maplewood Heights. He always made learning so much fun. May he Rest in Paradise. 

So very sad to hear this news. Mr. Yasui was my sixth grade teacher at Honeydew Elementary and my favorite teacher of all. We stayed in touch for many years and he even attended my wedding back in 1996. He was always funny and made learning extra special for everyone. He will always be a bright light in my life. 

May you rest in peace Mr. Yasui, you were by far my favorite teacher and most memorable. You taught us at Honeydew Elementary and we would come visit you even after we moved into to middle school and high school. About 8 or 9 years ago I went to the Teacher's Appreciation event for the Renton School District and I was hoping to see you there.  I was so surprised when I saw you,  that you recognized me after at least 35 years and remembered me and the friends I had in class. I had heard that you were often nominated for Teacher of the year but that you wanted it to go to newer teachers. You were such a great teacher and I'm sure your made a difference in so many students lives just like you did in mine.  RIP
