Russell Stanley Christopherson, 87, passed away August 19, 2011, at his home in Seattle. Russ, the son of Oscar and Julia Christofferson, was born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota on February 28, 1924. He continued to live in Fergus Falls and attended local schools until 1941 at which time he moved to the Seattle area with his parents, sister Viola and brothers Orrin, Waldo and Roger.
On August 7, 1943 Russ entered active duty in the US Army Air Force serving in England, France and Germany during World War II and was discharged April 1, 1946. Shortly after returning to Seattle, he began employment with Charles L. Livers Construction Company as a carpenter and foreman until numerous injuries forced him into early retirement at the age of 57.
Russ married Irene Mjolsness on April 11, 1947. Together they have three children, Connie, Brian and Lane.
His "career" after retirement gave him opportunity to join in work projects, building or remodeling various LB churches in the area. Many projects at Rock of Ages reflect his handiwork. His love for travel sent him to Fergus Falls several times to work on renovation projects at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy. He also helped with many remodeling projects for family and friends. It seemed that he worked harder in his "retirement years" then in his early career years.
In his early twenties, Russ accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. This began a life-long ministry and service to his family, church and community. His steadfast Christian faith flowed through every aspect of his life as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. The family devotion and prayer time that he treasured so much played an important role in the spiritual growth of his family. His personal devotion time and prayer continued to the end of his days. His ministry and service within the church was seen in various positions and programs such as Lamplighters for children, Youth advisor, Trustee board, head usher and greeter.
He was a kind and compassionate person who loved to share hugs with any and all he encountered. He was often seen at coffee shops throughout the Ballard area
having fellowship with many friends and family.
For many years, Russ was known for his work with wood. From rocking horses to bird houses to model cars - his precision and passion produced beautiful treasures for others to enjoy.
Russ's sense of humor and twinkle in his eye were enjoyed by all who met him.
Russ is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene, daughter Connie (Bruce) Renneke, sons Brian (Astrid) Christopherson and Lane (Lori) Christopherson.
Grand children Kirsten Staszak, Troy Renneke, Shawn, Scott, Brent, Jason, and Kyle Christopherson; Great-grand children Erik, Jakob, Sofia, Ella Renneke; Gunnar and Gabe Christopherson, Henrik and Aksel Christopherson; and Conner Christopherson.
This is a tribute to an amazing man named Russell but all the glory and honor belong to the God who created him and has taken him home to his eternal reward.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation to the Swedish Hospice Care for their loving and compassionate care of Russell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Russell Christopherson's name to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy's "Capital Campaign", 610 Hillcrest Dr., Fergus Falls, MN 56537
