A great man & a great dive buddy, an example of someone who lived life to the fullest. We will miss his visits a great deal.

What I will remember most about Steve is the quantity of diving he would do during his visits here.  Steve would do the morning two-tank boat trip, and then as many shore dives in the afternoon and evening as he could find buddys for.  It was always funny to see him go through several dive buddies on a trip as they discovered that they couldn't keep up with Steve's dive load.  We always looked forward to Steve's visits and he will be missed.

Steve  Buckmaster       I remember  Buckmasterâ€¦. An old Chevy, grey, covered with body putty and primed, did it ever get painted?  Hiyuâ€™s rode in an old Reo school bus repainted blue, I ran the club for a couple of years.

Sept. 59â€™ the fall weather was great for hiking, We attracted and held a good group of freshman, Joe, big George, Nev Shanks Lisa, Kathy, MacIaasc, Maryanne, Phil, Pat Kehoe and Steve. We partied. Steve liked beer. He soon learned to drink his whisky clear. 

 Memoriesâ€¦Stu Anderson, Steve and I standing in a kitchen on a Saturday nite, liquor stores closed, party a little ragged, we finish off all the booze so we could send the troops home.  Did that more than once. We partied often. After seeing the girls home, we went to Steveâ€™s place by SU, drank a few beers before the 5AM early Mass. 

We wandered the hills in sun shine, and in rain. I remember leaving Seattle late one Friday nite, in a old VW bus in miserable, driving rain, going out to Lake Ozette on the Peninsula, drizzle all the way out to beach. That time of year, that time of day, the shelter and beach were ours.6:30p.m., still dark we crawl into our sleeping bags, pass around a 5th of V.O. doze some, wake up tired, wander out to surf, misty and breezy, fire at the shelter, bacon and pancakes, coffee on  the Coleman and V.O. in the second cup. Still tired back, so back in sâ€™bags by 11.  Mid after noon, Stu pops open a beer, waking every one. Stu couldnâ€™t sleep so had walked back to the store at the trailhead, purchased a case of beer and carried it out to beach. So we were up again a little after 4, sip beer, kick up fire. Awake and warm. we walked out to the surf. The weather was better, but could be better yet.  Big fire to warm up by, Fix a spaghetti dinner, nice of Steve to carry the wine. Its full dark by 6p.m. We killed the wine and napped on a full stomach   Awake at 10, all caught up on sleep, a cup of coffee and out to the beach. Itâ€™s quiet, the air is still, the tide is out, clouds have left, Steve, Stu, Joe, Little Pat, Dave, and I wander down the beach in starlight, passing around the VO. The whole world is ours alone.  Nothing but stars, and the muffled roar of the surf.                         

Memories of Fr. Logan saying Mass at Summerland on Rainier, could not keep candles lit. Steve and I each, by a candle, trying to prevent the wind from extinguishing the flame. Matches at hand, we cupped our hands around the flame, wind wins, we lose. Grab a flashlite, remove both ends, hold over relit candle.  Works fineâ€¦until the next gust. Candle wax on the inside of a flashlite is not good.  
 
We climbed.   Driving down to Oregon, in a monsoon, to climb Hood. Stayed at Timberline Lodge.  Hid in a booth in the cafeteria until they closed the gate and turned out the lites,   Then we rolled out the sleeping bags. When the lights came on in the morning, it was easy to be first in line. Memories too of being blown off Rainier, time or two.        

1962 memoriesâ€¦ I quit Boeing deciding to try L. A.  Had everything in VW bus. Stayed at Steveâ€™s a couple of nites, waiting to collect final Boeing check. Last day in Seattle, Buckmaster says Iâ€™ll come too. Whatâ€™s it to LA, 3-4-5 days? After Stopping in  Portland, Corvallis, Crater Lake, Mt Shasta, Mt Lassen, Reno, Sparks, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite Valley, Kings Canyon, Fresno, Owens Valley, Death Valley, Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon, The Grand Canyon, The Mohave Desert. We needed 6 weeks to make it to LA. I had a friend in down town LA where we stayed with a couple of days.  Got a small apt. in N. Hollywood.  Steve got a foremanâ€™s job at a car wash running a rough crew. Steve went back to Seattle around Thanksgiving. I had job at Douglas, Went home for Xmas and never returned to LA.

I remember his wedding and Mary.  She had some of us over to dinner at their apartment just before he left for the Army.

Didnâ€™t see him again until my first child was born in 1970.  Talked to him a couple of times when his daughter and mine were at Matteo Ricci.

I last saw him a couple of years ago at Virginia Mason Hospital.  I was being discharged the morning Steve had been returned to his room after heart surgery and an overnight in intensive care.

I remember Steveâ€¦Lots of good times   a long time ago,â€¦good times   Tom Morris.
