Steve was born in Spokane, WA & raised in Richmond Beach, WA. He spent most of his life in the Pacific NW but also created a life in Charlotte, NC where he spent the latter 15 years of his life. He served for the US Navy and was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam war.
He joins his mother & step father Ruth & Ike Thompson and sister Diana Allred.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Micah and Steve Potvin of Bellingham, WA; daughter and son-in-law Sarah and Kelly Gimel of Burien, WA; grandchildren Madelyn & Jake Potvin of Bellingham, WA; fiance Kate Freeman of Charlotte, NC; niece Jayme Nesvacil; nephew Robert Allred; and many lifelong friends including his best friend Jeff Westling.
Steve began his career in the medical equipment industry owning the Back Works store. He then sold the business and began working at Cascade Designs in Seattle. He developed the Varilite line that manufactures wheelchair seating and positioning products, including cushions, backs, belts, harnesses and accessories. He later went on to work for Snug Seat in North Carolina specializing in pediatric habilitation products. He soon became their vice president. He was an extremely hard worker with a ton of ambition and passion for his work. He helped countless children and their parents all over the world to live independent lives full of joy. He is loved & missed by them and his many colleagues who consider him a friend and brother.
He was a talented remodeler & "Daddy fix it" and was not right without a project going & a joke on his lips. Steve was a "political junky" and was happy to disagree with most of his friends on that favorite subject. He was incredibly smart. His quick mind loved curiosity in others, debate "nunchuck skills and conversations with everyone he met in his world travels.
He holds a special place in the hearts of his family who love him immensely and miss him every day. To his daughters he is the strongest man in the world who could (and did) do anything. A man who took care of those he loved. He is the love of Kate's life and is with her still & always.
A memorial service will be held at 4pm on Saturday May 17th followed by a potluck reception at Evergreen Washelli Funeral home 11111 Aurora Ave. N, Seattle, WA 98133.
