Valeta was born in Everett, WA to Elmer and Ellen Walcher in 1921 joining her 3 older siblings Velma, Cleo and Clinton. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1939 and set off for Seattle to work and enroll in accounting classes. She worked various jobs including the Greyhound Bus Depot, Frederick & Nelson and at Pier 91.
Valeta married Walter (who preceded her in death) in 1949 and they settled in Ballard in 1952. They welcomed 3 daughters Barbara, Ruth & Marjorie. She had always wanted boys. Which she finally got by marriage. Ray in 1990 and Mark in 2000. She loved us all and we loved her back!
Valeta was incredibly smart. She put her bookkeeping skills to work her entire life doing taxes, acting as treasurer for various entities and keeping the books for a friend’s hair salon. She was always active in church work and raised her girls to follow in her footsteps. She was fun loving and funny. Everyone loved being around her. Even towards the end she always had a big beautiful smile!
She loved to travel. Anytime anywhere. Favorites were Hawaii, Disney and road trips to California and Canada. She was an avid reader. She would say “You will never be bored as long as you can read”. She loved puzzles of all kinds. Someone recently said “She had a good poker face. You could never tell when she had a good pinochle hand”. And she was famous for her flow charts whenever we had visitors.
Valeta leaves behind her children, Barbara, Ruth (Ray) and Marjorie (Mark who preceded her in death). Numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends who were like family.
