Vance Clipson, 74, passed away on September 7th at his home in Seattle, WA. He is survived by his children Vance and Marisa, as well as his grandchildren Grace and Sophie and daughter-in-law Terri. Vance was born at Maynard Hospital in Seattle on February 9, 1940 to Freeman and Helen Vance Clipson. Vance always took pride in the deep roots his mother’s family has in Puget Sound, as the Vances started a lumber company in Elma in the 1880s, then moved to Seattle in the 1920s to begin a successful hotel business.
Vance attended Garfield High School, where he was chiefly interested in the arts and was a pole vaulter on the track team. Following high school he served in the Coast Guard and attended the Cornish Institute. He made a living as a talented professional artist for many years, then owned a successful residential appraisal business. He loved attending social functions at the Washington Athletic Club and was a fixture in the judo club, earning a second degree black belt. Along with his art, his great passion was his kids, coaching their sports teams and attending whatever events he could – he was always excited to go to movies, celebrate holidays or just get lunch. His humor and eccentricities will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
