Vance Hurt, longtime resident of Queen Anne Hill, passed away on February 10, 2003 in Seattle, Washington. Vance was born February 7, 1918 in Golden, Missouri, to Thomas Durward Hurt and Ada Burris Hurt, their 7th child. In 1922 the family moved West to California, to be reunited with other family, and hopefully, by finding much sought after work, be able to provide for the family more easily. Vance grew up in various cities in southern California, eventually graduating from high school, joining the Conservation Corps, then the US Army.
In 1944, while on leave in Seattle, he met and married the love of his life, Beatrice Rose Hoffman. They had seven children, Paula Maria Knauer, Susan Perri White, Judith Claire deceased, Stephen Thomas Hurt, Lynn Marcia Watters, Deborah Margaret Luce, and Martin Timothy Hurt. The family made their home on Queen Anne Hill, since 1949.
Vance worked at the US Post Office for 27 years, retiring in 1977. He loved to do vegetable gardening each year, especially looking forward to the harvest of the tomatoes. He also loved to go up on the hill each day and have coffee and visit with the "regulars", especially enjoyed his friend Pat, who worked at the Thriftway coffee stand. He was also a lover of Big Band music, he had a vast collection of records, and his children remember hearing this music each day in their home. The children remember their Dad as being a man of honesty, integrity and trustworthiness. Also, his humor was most unique, he had nicknames for each child.
We love you Dad, thank you for the gift of your humor, and all of the wonderful meals that you cooked for us, we will miss you, we pray you rest in eternal peace, Love, your seven children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Swedish Hospital Cancer Institute In Seattle. The family wishes to thank Queen Anne Healthcare Staff, for their loving care for their father.
