Born August 9, 1920, Walter passed away November 6th in Seattle. Walter was born in Ballard, graduated from Lincoln High School and the U of W, with a degree in Fisheries. He was a U.S. Marine Corp. Captain and served in the Pacific during WWII. He moved to territorial Alaska in 1950 as one of the first employees of the Dept. of Fisheries. In 1961 he was appointed Commissioner of Fish and Game, a position he held until 1967. He later worked for the U.S. Dept. of Interior and NOAA in Washington D.C. and Seattle; managing the Pribiloff Fur Seal Program before his retirement in 1983. Walter is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marjorie, his two children, Mark Barbara of San Diego, Susan William of Juneau and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his kind, sweet disposition and his infectious laugh. Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday, November 11, 2004 at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home, Seattle.
