Funeral services will commence at 2 PM on Saturday, May 19th at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church with Willie Spreen officiating. Interment will follow at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
Alice was born on September 30, 1924 to Carl Kroll Jr. and Vera Feller at Harper, Texas. Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Andrew Kroll and granddaughter-in-law, Jacqueline Holtz. She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving husband of 68 years, Ted Holtz; and two sons, Stephen Holtz of San Angelo, Texas and his wife Beth, and Quintin Holtz of Seguin, Texas. Also surviving Alice are the pride of her life, her five grandchildren: Kevin Holtz of Cedar Park, Texas, Brian Holtz and his wife Jodi of Austin, Texas, Amy Ivey and her husband, Sid of Yantis, Texas, Wendy Holtz of Memphis, Tenn., and Tonya Fikes and her husband, Chris of Phayao, Thailand; 10 great grandchildren; her sister, Emily Knibbe; her brother, Linver Kroll and his wife, Mary; two sisters-in-law: Etta Mae Englehart and Pauline Shillings; and a host of loving family members and friends.
Alice was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. James Lutheran Church in Doss, Texas and is a current member of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church in Seguin, Texas. Alice attended elementary school in Doss, Texas and graduated from Harper High School. Following her graduation she boarded with friends in San Antonio, Texas and attended Draughn’s Business School. At a USO dance, she met a soldier from Marion named Ted Holtz. After a brief courtship, she took a train to Liberal, Kansas where Ted was stationed and they were married on August 14, 1943. She became an Army wife and while Ted was stationed in Salt Lake City, Utah, they became parents of their first son, Stephen Theodore on March 2, 1945. Following Ted’s discharge from the service, they moved to Seguin, Texas where they began to farm. May 19, 1947 brought Alice and Ted their second son, Quintin Carl. Alice was a vital part of operation of the family farm.
Alice loved to travel. She took several trips with Elsie’s tours and she and Ted took many trips after they semi-retired from farming. They enjoyed their trips to the Montana mines and many fishing and camping trips to Colorado with family. She loved to fish whenever the chance came to do so with her boys. They were able to take a trip with close friends to Alaska, and even traveled to Germany to visit their family roots. Alice enjoyed going to the panhandle to be with Ted while he continued his love for hunting.
Alice loved people. She blessed so many during her life as she was constantly caring and doing for others, especially family. Alice loved to bowl 9 pin at Laubach Bowling Club and made many wonderful memories. She and Ted not only put their two sons through college, but also their five grandchildren. If a family member needed anything, she was always there. Alice loved family gatherings, especially the yearly family reunions and having her family together anytime possible. Another of Alice’s joys came from her association with the ladies at TOPS and the close friendships she formed with so many ladies since joining TOPS in 1987. Alice loved attending worship services and had a wonderful relationship with her Lord. As Alice’s eyesight began to fail, she remained in contact with family and friends by phone, never missing anyone’s birthday.
Alice loved her cats, but the joy of her life in her later years was her dog, Teddy.
We celebrate her life and her ability to make each one feel so special. She would be the first one to invite you to her table and the last one to be seated. Now she will be the guest of honor at the Lord’s dinner table.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Alice’s honor to St. Jude’s Hospital, the Fike’s Mission Fund, c/o Kerrville Church of Christ at 1900 Loop 534, Kerrville, TX 78028, or the charity of your choice. Please visit the online guest book at www.goetzfuneral.com.
